Laurent Bécue-renard

A graduate of Sciences Po Paris and of the Higher School of Economic and Commercial Sciences (Essec), Laurent Bécue-Renard moves to the United States thanks to the Fullbright scholarship as a researcher at Columbia University in New York.

In 1995, in the last year of the war in Bosnia-Herzegovina, he moved to Sarajevo and became editor-in-chief of the magazine Sarajevo Online. It is this same magazine that publishes its Chronicles of Sarajevo, a collection of short stories. After the war, he returned to Bosnia-Herzegovina and began making a documentary. There he follows three Bosnian women in therapy, who face grief and try to rebuild themselves after the war. This reflection on the psychic consequences of those who remain is titled Living After: Words of Women, and was awarded the Peace Prize in Cinema at the Berlinale in 2001. The documentary was released in theaters in 2003 under the name War weary.

In 2006, he produced La Traversée, Elisabeth Leuvrey's documentary which sets out to meet the men and women who, every summer, board the ferry that connects Marseille to Algiers.

On May 21, 2014, Des hommes et de la Guerre was presented at the Cannes Film Festival during a special screening in the official selection Out of Competition. This new documentary by Bécue-Renard continues to deal with the post-war period, but this time by following, for several years, young American veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. At the cinema on October 8, 2014, he portrayed post-traumatic syndromes and the chaotic and trying return to the social and family life of these soldiers.
