Biography
Avant de se tourner vers le cinéma, Larry Clark se lance dans la photographie dès 1963. En 1971, paraît Tulsa, son premier album dans lequel il expose les pratiques déviantes des marginaux de sa ville natale. Ce livre fait grand bruit par son sujet sulfureux et son ton délibérément provocateur.
Larry Clark publie en 1983 un deuxième recueil de photos autobiographiques, intitulé Teenage lust, pour lequel il obtient une bourse de la National Endowment for the Arts (Fondation nationale pour les arts). Suit en 1993 The Perfect childhood, un ouvrage dans lequel il présente des jeunes gens à moitié nus en pleines étreintes ou s'amusant avec des armes.
Encouragé par Gus Van Sant et Martin Scorsese, deux de ses plus grands admirateurs, Larry Clark passe à la réalisation de longs métrages et met en scène Kids qui sera présenté aux Festivals de Sundance et de Cannes en 1995. Là encore, il explore les dérives du monde adolescent à travers un groupe de jeunes gens de Manhattan qui sombrent dans la drogue.
Se situant dans le même registre et inspiré de faits réels, Another day in paradise, son second long métrage, est un road movie sanglant dans lequel James Woods et Melanie Griffith initient un jeune couple aux pratiques criminelles. Cette oeuvre obtient le Grand Prix du Festival du film policier de Cognac en 1999. En 2001, Larry Clark met en scène Bully, l'histoire du meurtre sauvage d'un adolescent tyrannique par quelques-uns de ses amis.
Toujours dans la même veine, il coréalise avec son chef-opérateur Edward Lachman le film Ken Park en 2003, un tableau provocant de jeunes Américains trompant leur ennui avec du sexe, de la violence et de la perversion. Ce film, censuré dans plusieurs pays, est l'occasion pour Larry Clark d'adapter à nouveau un traitement d'Harmony Korine, le scénariste de Kids.
L'exposition autobiographique Punk Picasso permet ensuite à Larry Clark de présenter une rétrospective de son travail photographique. Il part ensuite photographier des jeunes rockers latinos à Los Angeles pendant une année. C'est avec eux qu'il tournera son prochain film, Wassup rockers, entre South Central et Beverly Hills, abordant à nouveau la culture du skateboard et du punk rock.
Clark took part in the 2006 anthology Destricted, a film manifesto around pornography, to which Gaspar Noé and Matthew Barney were invited. In 2012, the atypical director is again interested in the world of adolescents with Marfa Girl, a social drama in which a young boy of Hispanic origin is subjected to racism in a small town in Texas.
With The Smell of Us, in 2014 he took his cameras to Paris and followed the daily life of a gang of inseparable young skaters. Faithful to his universe, Clark films youth again by taking an interest in his loves, his ardor but also his idleness.
