Biography

"Red Mold" is a group popular in narrow circles of amateurs and contemporaries of Soviet post-punk. The peak of the band's popularity came in the 90s, but despite the demand for the creativity of "Red Mold" among young people, the group did not achieve national popularity - the specific style of texts with an abundance of obscene language interfered.

Creation history and composition

The first years of its existence, the group "Red Mold" consisted of one person - Pavel Yatsyna. The musician was born on August 10, 1969 in Krasnodar, but at the age of 10 he moved to Yalta with his parents. Initially, Pavel tried to play heavy metal, but, as he himself admitted in an interview in 2012, he quickly realized that this musical style was not in demand, less than 2% of people listen to it. Yatsyna began to look for his own style, changed the manner of singing, the direction of the texts.

In 1993 Pavel recorded his first album, Red Mold, using a synthesizer, electric guitar and mixer. The vocals were recorded on a home tape recorder. To create the effect of the group, Yatsyna invented the rest of the band members - guitarist Valentin Perov and Sergei Machulyak, a poet. With this "composition" "Krasnaya Mold" recorded the next 3 albums.

It was difficult to achieve recognition - obscene language made it impossible to go to radio or television. To track his popularity, Pavel wrote a postal address at the end of the album, which then received letters from people who appreciated his work.

At first, the geography of listeners was limited to the cities of Crimea, then letters began to come from neighboring regions, then from all over the country and the former USSR. Soon it became clear from the correspondence that they learned about the "Red Mold" abroad - in the USA and Canada, and this in one year.

The popularization of the group was also helped by the place of residence of Yatsyna - the resort town, even during the reconstruction, gathered many vacationers. Another factor was the specificity of the niche: with obscene language and defiant, unofficially forbidden topics, except for "Mold", only "Gaza Strip" worked.

After the first success, Yatsyna began to invite musicians, singers and parodists to record. Thus, 7 more albums were recorded. Pavel started making money on their release only in 1996, when a copyright law was passed in Russia. Krasnaya Mold began to cooperate with Master Sound, with which it lasted 10 years, until the moment when recording on a phonorecord ceased to be relevant.

Since 2008, the collective has been actively involved in concert activities. During its existence, "Red Mold" has changed 8 compositions, and dozens of people participated in the recordings of albums as invited artists. Until 2018, the group had only one permanent member - its founder Pavel Yatsyna.

Creation

A distinctive feature of the work of "Red Mold" is the disregard for social and ethical norms. Of all the albums released, only 2 did without foul language: "Ballads and Lyrics" and "Little Boy and Other Pioneer Couplets".

Musicians identify themselves as punk-rock or post-punk, but representatives and fans of the classic punk movement tend to disagree with this. This opinion is argued by the fact that the presence of obscenities and provocative themes in the texts is not a genre characteristic of punk music.

"Red Mold" creates both original content and creativity that parodies and plays on existing songs and poems. Occasionally the group records serious compositions, but they are less popular than humorous songs characteristic of "Red Mold".

The creativity of the group can be combined according to the most striking parameters.

Ballads. Meaningful songs, as a rule, are lyrics, with a high-quality musical component, without obscene vocabulary and with text that has a specific meaning. Regular songs. The group's classic works are absurdist texts of a low poetic level with an abundance of obscenities and an emphasis on the themes of violence, sex, alcoholism and drug addiction. Songs using modern folk ditties in the genre of black humor, "sadies" as a leitmotif. That is, playing around the quatrains popular in the 90s about a little boy or a little girl with whom all sorts of troubles happen. Parodies of popular music, mainly Russian, also using obscene vocabulary. An absurd rethinking of fairy tales and historical plots. The most famous example is Kulikovskoe Mochilovo. Imitation songs - compositions, written in the style of certain performers. Conversational inserts that come both after the songs and during their sounding.

Often during the introductions to the songs, imitations of the voices of popular movie characters and political figures are used: Brezhnev, Gorbachev, Associate Professor from "Gentlemen of Fortune".

At the very beginning of the group's work, there is an anti-communist theme as a separate leitmotif. Since the 2000s, one can observe the opposite trend with positive characteristics of the USSR.

The band's music until 2003 was predominantly electronic, rock arrangements began to appear only in 1997. The first home-recorded albums were notable for poor sound quality and an abundance of errors.

The Red Mold clips are predominantly low quality flash clips, but there are a few live footage. CD covers are often hand-drawn, in a caricature genre, but early albums use photos of the band members.

Pavel Yatsyna is also notable for the fact that he was the first to make and patented an electric guitar out of a shovel, and later even created the "Shovellica" project, playing only on such guitars. The instrument itself was included in the Ukrainian Book of Records.

On the web, in publications about the group, there are excerpts from the research of a certain Helene Piaget, allegedly a professor of social anthropology at the Sorbonne, who studies the Russian punk movement. On behalf of the researcher, the group is credited with the title of the phenomenon of world punk and indirect quotes are stylized as scientific calculations.

However, it is impossible to find a mention of the professor in a different context on the Internet. There is a possibility that Helene Piaget is a fictional character.

"Red mold" now

The group's discography includes 58 official albums. The last ones were released with the money of fans. "Krasnaya Mold" continues to tour - this format of creativity is most in demand, since, according to Yatsyna, the peak of the group's popularity remained in the 90s.

The audience of the collective is mainly people who fell in love with the group at the beginning of their work, the musicians themselves describe themselves as a "window into the 90s".

On December 31, 2017, Pavel Yatsyna announced on his VKontakte page that he was leaving the group. The musician named Sergei Levchenko as the successor and frontman of "Red Mold". Fans reasonably believe that the history of the group in its classic style ended there.

Now the 9th line-up of "Red Mold" is playing at concerts:

Sergey Levchenko - parody, vocals, backing vocals by Yulian Nesterov - drums Alexey Frolov - vocals, guitar Ilya Afanasyev - bass guitar Ilya Narezhny - parody, keys, guitar Alexander Zenko - director
