Biography

Guitarist Keith Richards is the heart and soul of the Rolling Stones, which has been named "The Greatest Rock'n'roll Band in the World." Most of the group's compositions were sorted into quotes by grateful fans.

Musician, singer and songwriter Keith Richards was born in Dartford, England on December 18, 1943. As a child, the musician's grandfather, who worked as a conductor, had a significant impact on the boy's future profession. Richards' mother, Doris, was also very fond of music. Keith developed vocal skills as a child as a singer in the school choir. At the age of 10, he already sang at the coronation of Elizabeth II with the choir.

Richards' voice changed as a teenager along with his interests. At the age of 15, the young man received his first guitar as a gift from his mother. Richards devoted most of his free time to learning how to play a new musical instrument using the songs of Elvis Presley as an example (in particular, the musical composition "It's okay, Mom").

As a student, Richards was expelled from Dartford Tech School for regularly missing classes. The headmaster of the Dartford School suggested Keith enroll in Sidcoop School of the Arts instead. But the young man continued to stubbornly skip classes in Sidcoop, devoting more time to his own music than studying commercial art.

While studying at art school, Richards met guitarist Dick Taylor, who was in a band with Mick Jagger. Richards at that time already knew Jagger, the boys grew up together in Dartford. Keith soon joined their band, then called the Little Boy Blue or the Blue Boys.

Music

All three members of the formed musical group shared a love for the American blues, and Richards was also inspired by American rock and roll. In particular, the young man was impressed by the work of Chuck Berry. Keith bought an electric guitar and learned to play some of Berry's hits, including Maybelline.

The group focused mainly on making blues music. Soon the guys gave their first concerts. Jagger and Richards went to audition for Alexis Corner's Blues Incorporated, a new blues band that played frequently at the Ealing Club. That night the band was joined by the amazing guitarist Brian Jones, who at the time used the stage name "Elmo Lewis".

Richards and Jagger were impressed by Jones. Soon the young people became roommates and associates. It was during this period that Jones tried to form his own group. Their friends Dick Taylor and pianist Ian Stewart were also part of the early Rolling Stones in 1962.

By the middle of the following year, the composition of the Rolling Stones changed: drummer Charlie Watts joined the musicians. Taylor left the band and was replaced by musician Bill Wyman. Stewart continued to act as the Rolling Stones manager and guest musician. Under the leadership of their manager, Andrew Log Oldham, the young people of the Rolling Stones were positioned as brutal guys.

At first, the band mainly recorded cover versions of hits from other artists. But Richards and Jagger, along with their bandmates, soon developed into a tight-knit songwriting team, initially using the pseudonym "Nanker Phelge" for some of the early work.

The Rolling Stones first hit the UK charts in 1964 with a cover of Bobby Womack's "It's All Over Now". The same year, the band released their self-titled debut album and toured the United States, recording their first American hit, "That Girl Belongsto Yesterday." Hits from albums recorded in the 70s and 80s of the 20th century soon followed, including Sticky Fingers (1971), Exileon MainSt. (1972), Emotional Rescue (1980) and Tattoo You (1981).

In the mid-1980s, the Rolling Stones took a break: Jagger focused on his solo career. Working independently, Keith Richards released his first solo album, "TalkIs Cheap" (1988), which received positive reviews from music critics.

The release of Richards and Jagger's collaboration, Steel Wheels (1989), was hailed by fans as the band's comeback. In 1993, Keith released a song called "Eileen", which was highly praised by both fans of the musician and critics. The next album "Voodoo Lounge" (1994) also sold a solid circulation, securing the group the second place in the music charts.

Films

In 2005, the Rolling Stones released their next album, Bigger Bang. It received positive reviews and sold well despite the lack of popular singles. In support of the album, the band went on tour again. Some of the 2006 concerts were rescheduled after Richards suffered a head injury when falling from a tree in Fiji. To heal the injury, he had to undergo brain surgery. Richards fully recovered and resumed touring a few weeks later. Keith stated that he gave up drugs after surgery.

In 2007, Keith Richards appeared on television with a small role in Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End. In the film, he played the father of the popular pirate Johnny Depp, Captain Jack Sparrow.

Personal life

Many of the band members seemed to live up to their image of wild rockers, enjoying a laid-back lifestyle. In this regard, the Richards home in the English province was searched by the police on February 12, 1967. Mick Jagger, his girlfriend Marianne Faithfull and several other people were at home with Keith at that time. During the search, police officers found drugs and other dubious devices.

Both Jagger and Richards were convicted of drug possession and drug offenses, but the sentences were dismissed on appeal. In the years that followed, Richards faced several more drug-related arrests.

After Jones left the Rolling Stones in 1969, the guys focused on the direction of rock music in their work. In December of that year, Richards first became a father: his girlfriend Anita Pallenberg gave birth to a son, Marlon. In 1972, the couple had a second child, a daughter named Dandelion (translated from English - dandelion). Later, the girl was renamed Angela. Keith Richards' third child, a son named Tara, died a few weeks after birth in 1976.

By the late 1970s, Richards had developed a serious heroin addiction. In 1977, the musician was arrested with a lot of hard drugs and cocaine in Toronto, Canada. Under the threat of life imprisonment, Richards was allowed to travel to the United States to receive drug addiction treatment. The preventive measure against the musician has been reduced.

Despite his tough fight with drugs, Richards was able to return to music. The Rolling Stones' next album, Some Girls (1978), was a huge success, selling eight million copies. However, Keith continued to experience substance abuse problems. Tensions began to build within the group, especially between Richards and Jagger. They argued constantly: recording albums and touring, they could not talk for weeks.

The future of the group seemed unclear, but Keith's personal life underwent a dramatic change. In 1983, when the musician was 40 years old, Richards married the model Patti Hansen. The couple later had two twin daughters, Theodora and Alexandra. Thus, the musician has four children from two wives.

In October 2010, Richards released his autobiography, Life. The book showed that Keith loves to read and owns an extensive collection of literary works, as well as talks about his reflections on the world of a rock star, drug experiments, women in his life and his relationship with Mick Jagger. The biography of the famous musician in the first person sold in a million copies and was sold out instantly.

On March 25, 2016, the Rolling Stones held a free concert for 500,000 people in Havana, Cuba, where their music was previously banned by the country's communist regime. The concert follows the historic visit of US President Barack Obama as part of an effort to normalize US relations with Cuba. The show at the Ciudad Deportivo sports arena in Havana was the band's first concert in Cuba and part of a South American tour in 2016.

Despite his considerable age, the musician maintains a personal page on Instagram, where he regularly uploads photos from concerts. So, judging by the photo reports, in October 2017, the Rolling Stones visited Barcelona, Spain with a concert.
