After studying French and dramatic art in California, Kathy Baker moved to Paris for ten years, far from the film industry. At the beginning of the 80s, she returned to her land, eager to make a name for herself as an actress. Her wishes were quickly granted since in 1983, she starred in the play Fool for love by Sam Shepard and appeared in the cast of the drama L 'Etoffe des heros by Philip Kaufman.

Much more regular on the big screen, she participated in the historical drama Return to Cold Mountain alongside Nicole Kidman and Jude Law, then in 2004 played the mother of Jennifer Garner in the comedy 30 years or nothing.

From 2004, she multiplied appearances in successful television series: Monk in 2004, Nip / Tuck in 2005, Gilmore Girls and New York Special Unit in 2007, Grey's Anatomy in 2008, New York Criminal Section in 2009, New York Police Judiciaire in 2010 and especially Medium, where she played the character of Marjorie Dubois, present in five episodes between 2005 and 2010. At the same time, she played supporting roles in the cinema alongside Sean Penn and Kate Winslet (Les Fous du roi, 2006), Dustin Hoffman and Emma Thompson (Last Chance for Love, 2008), as well as Michael Shannon and Jessica Chastain (Take Shelter, by Jeff Nichols, winner of Critics' Week at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival).
