Biography
Child of the ball, Julie Andrews debuted on stage at the age of twelve and conquered Broadway, in 1954, with The Boy Friend , a musical comedy imported from England. Recognized singer and actress, she must however leave it to Audrey Hepburn to embody on the screen the main role of My Fair Lady, which she had made triumph on stage. However, fate smiled on her very quickly when in 1964, she debuted on the big screen by playing the title role of Mary Poppins, which brought her glory and the Oscar for Best Actress. Ironically, she won this award even though Audrey Hepburn herself was nominated for My Fair Lady.
Julie Andrews then goes on to musical comedies, notably winning a triumph with Robert Wise's The Melody of Happiness. She also discusses other registers such as the drama Hawai by George Roy Hill or the thriller The Rideau torn, which has her play under the orders of Alfred Hitchcock.
Her career takes on new impetus when she meets her future husband, director Blake Edwards, who gives her some of her most defining roles. A more aggressive femininity and more ambiguity then characterize her characters in films like Top Secret or Elle, and especially the double role of Victor Victoria. After a performance noticed in another film by her husband, That's life, where she plays a mature woman with cancer, Julie Andrews abandons the cinema in favor of television for fifteen years.
It is with a production signed Disney, Princess in spite of herself, shot under the direction of Garry Marshall and in which she plays the Queen of Genovia, that she made her big return to the cinema in 2001. Three years later and after having lent her voice to another Queen, that of Shrek 2, she agrees to reprise her role in a sequel called A Princess Wedding. She does not leave the world of animation since she plays in the sequels of Shrek, as well as in Once upon a time, mixing film and cartoon. Inexhaustible, she lends her voice to the mother of Gru, the hero of Me, ugly and bad (2010).
