Biography
American writer Judith McNaught writes fascinating love novels. The books are sold in millions of copies, translated into dozens of languages. Readers all over the world empathize with the heroes of sentimental novels, shed tears over sad episodes and rejoice in happy ends. The heroines of these books are not afraid to act and feel, whether they live in Regency England or in the United States of the 20th century.
fact
Childhood and youth
Judith was born on May 10, 1944 in San Luis Obispo County in western California. However, this is an insignificant detail of the biography, because the girl's childhood was spent in constant travels around the country. Father's work required annual relocations, and the family moved with him. Each school year began at a new school, and had to part with friends over and over again and make new ones.
Fourteen-year-old Judith firmly decided that in adulthood everything will be measured and calm - no big travels and shocks. Therefore, the girl chose a career as a business administrator, enrolling in a relevant college and successfully completing her studies in 1966. And then the adventures began: the college graduate did not expect a catch from the announcement of the vacancy of a personnel manager in a reputable company.
The surprise was the direction of the company: it was a major airline. The company's management suddenly decided that the new manager would cope with the role of a flight attendant. It took Judith and her superiors two weeks to realize the fallacy of this idea: the girl felt sick in the air. After two years of searching for a quiet job, the young American decided to try herself in the role of a wife and housewife, traditional for US women.
fact
Personal life
In 1968, Judith married a handsome, tall brunette, to whom she gave birth to two children - a son, Clayton and a daughter, Whitney. In the woman's new house, everything was fine, except for her husband, who did not fit into the painted picture of the world. The couple broke up. Judith went to work again. But the hard work left no time for raising children, and measured and predictable turned out to be terribly boring.
While working for a film company, the woman met Michael McNaught. It was love at first sight, which the writer would later try to describe in her novels. The second union, concluded in 1974, turned out to be happy: Michael had a large house in Detroit, five children from his first marriage and a cheerful character. Judith's life was filled with harmony, joy and love, there was no need to rush anywhere anymore - the dream came true.
Five years later, the spouse began to fly away from the cozy family nest more and more often: Mr. McNaught opened a business in St. Louis and plunged into new worries. And Mrs. McNaught discovered romance novels. At first, Judith drove away anxiety with the help of reading, and later began to write her own stories. For three years she learned to write in a way that would make readers cry and laugh at the pages of her books.
And in 1983, Michael died. An accident in which no one is to blame. It was necessary to deal with the issues of the legacy business. It was possible to rest and travel. But to pour out grief and console the widow helped the composition of love stories - in them she was able to describe her feelings and dreams. Later, there was a third marriage, with athlete Don Smith, which ended in divorce in 2003. The former spouses remained friends.

Literature
The first novel, Whitney, Beloved, Judith McNaught wrote intermittently for four years, from 1978 to 1982. The manuscript was rewritten, but rejected by the editors of the publishing houses. The first text that we managed to print was "Triumph of Tenderness", published in 1983. It was followed by the "Battle of Desires". The success of these books with the reader forced the publishers to publish in 1986 and "Whitney, Darling." In 1989, The Kingdom of Dreams was published, chronologically preceding the Whitney novel.
The aspiring writer unconsciously changed the established literary tradition and created an original genre. Previously, historical novels about the era of the Regency described the adventures of heroes, at most - flirting and romantic experiences. The heroes and heroines of McNaught's books turned out to be people of flesh and blood: they loved, felt, made mistakes and went to bed with their loved ones.
This style immediately found fans and imitators: about a hundred authors writing in this genre appeared in the world. In addition to the characteristic style, the books published by Judith McNaught differ in the image of the heroines. The women in her novels cannot sit quietly in a stone tower, waiting for a young prince on a white horse. They work. Strong, loyal and loving, wise and sensual heroines make readers want to be in the place of characters in books.
In the nineties, the author began writing a series of novels known as the Modern Series. It turned out to be easier - there was no need to think over the historical details, it was easier for the readers to feel themselves "in the shoes" of the heroines, and the competition among writers was less. Thanks to the books "Paradise", "The Art of the Photographer", "Night Rustles" girls and housewives learned to find romance in everyday life.
The books Once and for All, Something Wonderful and Blessing from Heaven are combined into a romantic series. Young aristocrats from these books have no other problems than choosing a husband from among many candidates. Judith herself understands business better than romance. The author did not just tell fairy tales for her own entertainment, but she studied the market and publishers.
In 1988, her books were on the New York Times bestseller list, and since then, each new novel has also become a bestseller. Judith McNaught has been awarded prestigious American literary critics awards, books have been translated into various languages and are available to readers around the world. Fans dream of film adaptations of novels, wanting to see their favorite characters in films.
Ladies' novels are usually classified as second-rate, tabloid literature. They are called one-time readings and paperbacks. These derogatory epithets do not apply to Judith's works: she was the first to sign a contract for a multimillion print run of books of the romantic genre in hardcover. Plump volumes in colorful dust covers have rightfully taken their place on the shelves of the cabinets, delighting the second generation of readers.
In 1993, while working on Perfection Itself, Judith McNaught learned that almost one in five American women can barely read. The writer, who considers literature to be the main consolation in life, did not accept this state of affairs and joined in the fight against illiteracy. She spent part of the novel's royalties on developing teaching methods for the illiterate, and includes detailed guidance in each of her books.
