Biography
First a journalist, Juan Antonio Bayona joined the Cinema and Audiovisual School of Catalonia (ESCAC) with the aim of becoming a director. After graduation, he directed commercials, music videos and several short films.
It was in 2007 that Juan Antonio Bayona acquired worldwide fame, when he presented his first feature film for the cinema: The Orphanage. This scary and visually very elaborate film co-produced by Guillermo Del Toro is well received on its release, both by critics and audiences (it even becomes the biggest Spanish success of all time when it is released).
With this success, Juan Antonio Bayona continues four years later with The Impossible carried by an international cast led by Naomi Watts and Ewan McGregor. This film, which focuses on a family separated by the 2004 tsunami, is also a big hit in theaters as it brings in close to $ 170 million worldwide and climbs to seventh place at the Spanish box office of all time (with 6.2 million entries).
After directing two episodes of the horrific-fantasy series Penny Dreadful, Juan Antonio Bayona tackles the ambitious A few minutes after midnight. This film, adapted from a successful novel, tells the story of a little boy who, to escape his difficult daily life, escapes into an imaginary world populated by extraordinary creatures.
