Childhood and youth

Joseph Satriani was born on July 15, 1956 in Westbury, New York, to an Italian immigrant family: his grandparents are from Piacenza and Bobbio, respectively. In addition to him, the family raised four children.

The boy took his first steps towards musical success at the age of 9 and began with drums. However, instead of the "barrel" and crash, which are found in any drum kit, Joe had a coffee can and a training rubber pad (pad). For his successes, his father gave the young talent by element: tom-toms, hi-hats, rides. By the age of 11, the boy received his first Ludwig installation.

Intoxicated by Jimi Hendrix, the greatest guitarist of all time by Time magazine, Cream and Led Zeppelin, Joseph stopped drums and thought about guitar. In 1970, a coup took place in the boy's biography - Hendrix died on September 18, and Satriani made the final musical choice in favor of the guitar. The first instrument in the hands of the future virtuoso was Hagstrom III.

Progress has been amazingly fast. This was facilitated by extracurricular activities at school, where he studied the basics of music theory and musical notation, additional exercises at home using books and harmonic models, joint classes with jazz guitarist Billy Bauer and pianist Lenny Tristano. Soon Joe achieved such results that he began to give lessons himself. One of the first students in 1974 was Steve Vai - in the future, a unique lead guitarist and Satriani's colleague on the G3 project.

Satriani's father was a musician, and when the boy announced that he wanted to leave school to become a professional artist, his decision was supported. In 1978, at 22, the young man left for Berkeley, California. Here the list of students has expanded. Joe took guitar lessons from Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett, David Bryson from Counting Crows, lead guitarist and Third Eye Blind member Kevin Cadogan, Larry Lalonde from Primus and many others.

Music

As a young man, Joe met Jeff Campitelli, one of Rolling Stone magazine's finest drummers today. They founded The Squares. Later, the musician took part in the recording of several albums by Satriani.

For a short time, the guitarist played in The Greg Kihn Band. The proceeds from performances in this group helped Joseph pay off the loans he took for the release of his debut solo album.

The album was released in 1986 and was named "Not of This Earth". Critics took Satriani's first experience favorably: Phil Carter of All Music gave the album 4 out of 5 stars and described it as "a collection of excellent compositions that have a unique style, music out of this world." He also noted that the album "does not contain a single weak song."

A year later, the second album "Surfing with the Alien" was released. Now this album is considered the most successful in the discography of Joe Satriani, thanks to him the whole world learned about the guitarist. With modest funds ($ 13 thousand), the virtuoso managed to record a collection, which in 1989 became gold, and in 1992 - platinum, sold in a million copies. Two tracks became hits and charted on Billboard's Mainstream Rock - "Satch Boogie" (# 22) and "Surfing with the Alien" (# 37). Another track, "Always with Me, Always with You", was nominated for a Grammy.

The record's success caught the attention of Mick Jagger, lead singer of The Rolling Stones. He invited Joe to accompany him on the tour in support of his solo album "Primitive Cool" in 1988. Together, the musicians gave concerts in Australia and Japan.

At the peak of popularity in 1989, Satriani released "Flying in a Blue Dream", dedicated to the memory of his father. The album peaked at # 23 on the UK Billboard 200 and lasted 39 weeks; a year later it became gold.

In 1991, the guitarist was again nominated for a Grammy. The song "One Big Rush" was the soundtrack for the movie "Say Anything" (1989) with John Cusack in the title role, and the track "The Bells of Lal (Part One)" was the soundtrack for Billy Bob Thornton's "Sharpened Blade" (1996).

Due to his collaboration with Ibanez, Joe Satriani was briefly distracted from writing music. He created his own line of Ibanez JS Signature guitars. For the cover of the album "What Happens Next" (2018), the musician starred with one of the instrument configurations.

In 1992, the long-awaited album "The Extremist" was released, which is by far the most commercially successful. The song “Summer song” was used by Sony in advertising for the first portable disc player, the Discman.

A year later, musicians from the rock group Deep Purple invited Satriani to replace the departed Richard Blackmore, one of the founders and songwriter. Joe performed successfully in Japan and was offered to join the band forever, but the guitarist opted for solo work. At the same time, he released Time Machine, and in 1995, Joe Satriani. Both compilations were nominated for a Grammy, but did not bring victory.

In 1996, the G3 project was founded, in which only Satriani was a permanent participant.

At various times, Steve Vai, John Petrucci, Yngwie Malmsteen, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Robert Fripp, Steve Morse and many others played with him in G3.

In 1998, Satriani released the album "Crystal Planet", which included such hits as "Love Thing", "Ceremony" and "Up in the Sky", and two years later a unique sounding electronic disc "Engines of Creation" was released. peaked at number 90 on the Billboard 200 for three weeks.

Albums continued to be released 2 years apart: "Strange Beautiful Music" (2002), "Is There Love in Space?" (2004), "Super Colossal" (2006), "Professor Satchafunkilus and the Musterion of Rock" (2008), "Black Swans and Wormhole Wizards" (2010).

In between music, Satriani was engaged in charity work. So, in 2006, he became an official sponsor of Little Kids Rock, which supplied musical instruments to US public schools for free.

In 2008, the guitarist formed the Chickenfoot group. He was accompanied by former Van Halen members Sammy Hagar and Michael Anthony, and Red Hot Chilli Peppers drummer Chad Smith.

A year later, the self-titled debut album was released. One of the songs, "Oh Yeah!", Peaked at # 21 on Billboard's Mainstream Rock and was featured in a music video. In 2011, the second album, Chickenfoot III, was released.

Simultaneously with the creation of the group, another high-profile event took place in Satriani's work - he sued Coldplay, because their song "Viva la Vida", which received two Grammy awards, included fragments of the guitarist's "If I Could Fly" track from the album " There Love in Space? "

Coldplay officials denied this claim. As a result, the parties signed an agreement, the details of which are unknown.

On April 24, 2012, the musician appeared on the big screen in 3D - the movie "Satchurated: Live in Montreal", recorded during a performance in Montreal in December 2010, was shown in cinemas. For its creation, directors François and Pierre Lamouret have received awards in the field of concert cinema.

In 2013, the guitarist released Unstoppable Momentum, which peaked at number 42 on the UK Billboard 200 for three weeks. In addition, the disc got into the top 100 compositions in 9 countries of the world. Two years later, Joe Satriani's jubilee 15th solo album, Shockwave Supernova, was released.

Personal life

Little is known about the personal life of the virtuoso. He has a wife, Rubin. It is known that the wife also plays the guitar. Family photos cannot be found on Joe Satriani's official Instagram page: there are only photos and videos from his performances.

The couple have a son, Zakaria. Once in an interview, Joe said that the boy was given a musical talent: he plays the guitar, mandolin, banjo and composes songs. The father dreams of performing on stage with his son as part of the G3 project.

fact

Joe Satriani now

In 2018, the guitarist released What Happens Next. The recording features Red Hot Chilli Peppers drummer Chad Smith and Deep Purple bassist Glenn Hughes. The disc, unlike the two previous ones, sounded in a new way: Satriani gave up electronic sound, preferring pure sound.

In addition, Joe continues to give concerts as a member of the "G3" project.

There are no news and prerequisites that the guitar maestro plans to end his musical career. As Satriani once noted in an interview, “I have a lot of music in my head. It is a pity that there is not enough time to properly formalize it. "
