Biography
The fighter went down in UFC history as the youngest champion in the entire period of the organization's existence. Light heavyweight John Jones is also known for being undefeated. In more than 10 years of a professional MMA career, he has not received a single defeat, not counting disqualification for elbow strikes. Jones became UFC champion twice and was stripped of the title twice for his scandalous behavior and problems with the law.
fact
Childhood and youth
Jonathan Dwight Jones was born on July 19, 1987 in Rochester, New York, USA. The boy grew up in a large and deeply religious family: Father Arthur Jones Jr. served as the pastor of a Pentecostal church, and his mother Camilla worked as a nurse.
The couple raised their four children in orthodox strictness: church activities instead of parties, entertainment and gifts. However, the parents did not have money for this, they lived very modestly. The eldest daughter Carmen helped her mother look after the brothers while she worked.
Arthur Jr., John and Chandler grew up friendly: in criminal Rochester, you had to stick together to survive. All three loved Carmen very much, but her sister passed away early: the girl was not even 18 years old when she was killed by brain cancer. The loss was a terrible blow to the guys.
All three grew up incredibly athletic, inheriting from their father both a love of sports and athletic ability. In the basement of their house in Endicott, where the family later moved, the father built a makeshift ring in which he practiced classes and competitions with his sons.
At school, the brothers became interested in football. Jones played in midfield. But the thin teenager began to stretch out strongly, for which he received the nickname Bones from the coach, meaning "bony". The future champion himself admits that “he didn’t succeed with football, he couldn’t fall in love with it.” Arthur and Chandler, meanwhile, have made strides on the field and are now professional American footballers, famous as their middle brother.
In 7th grade, Jones switched to Greco-Roman wrestling. But success came to him later, in high school. In 2004 he won the Union Endicott High School Championship and finished 3rd in the State Championship. After graduating from high school, John entered Iowa Central College, where he won the JUCO national championship.
However, due to problems with behavior and academic performance, he had to transfer to his home state of New York. He continued his education at Morrisville State College, studying forensics. But the guy had to interrupt this training, because his girlfriend Jesse Moses became pregnant. John left school, moved in with a friend and got a job as a "bouncer" in a nearby club.
At the moment when despair had already reached its limit, Jones received a message on the social network from an unknown user. Incognito invited him to try to make a career in the UFC and invited him to the BombSquad MMA gym, where mixed martial arts athletes trained.
fact
Martial arts
Having an excellent wrestling base and natural data of an athlete - outstanding height (193 cm with a weight of 93 kg), long limbs (the largest arm span among UFC fighters - 215 cm), John quickly went up the hill. A month after the first training session, he had a professional fight. The fight took place in April 2008 in Massachusetts at the Full Force Productions: Untamed 20 tournament. In 92 seconds, John laid his opponent, a little-known fighter, Brad Bernard, on the shoulder blades.
Over the next 6 months, Bones (the athlete began to perform in the ring under his football name) did not lose a single battle, after which the UFC offered to sign the long-awaited contract. Jones made his UFC debut on August 9, 2008, when he fought capoeira master André Guzmao and won by unanimous decision, noting the rookie's unconventional techniques.
Bones spent the next fights no less brilliantly, defeating Stefan Bonnard and Jake O'Brien. But in the fight with Matt Hamill, luck turned away from the lucky one: in 2009 at UFC: The Ultimate Finale 10, Jones, despite his leading position in the fight, was disqualified for an illegal elbow strike. This technical defeat still spoils the winning statistics of Jones' fights, which already pulls on a record.
Before going to the fight for the UFC champion title, the fighter had 2 victorious matches: with the Belarusian athlete Vladimir Matyushenko, who was sent to a technical knockout, and with Ryan Bader, who did not have a single defeat, against whom he used a choke hold.
The fight for the champion's belt between two light heavyweights - American John Jones and Brazilian Mauriciu Rua - gathered hundreds of fans at UFC 128. The spectacle was really spectacular: from the first minutes the American took a dominant position and fought a spectacular fight, using a technical knockout at the end of the third round. After a signal from the referee, 23-year-old Bones became the youngest champion in UFC history.
The next period in Jones's fighting biography is devoted to multiple title defenses. And every time the American walked out of every fight with honor. Among the fighters he defeated were eminent MMA athletes, UFC champions: Vitor Belfort, Lyoto Machida, Rashad Evans, Chail Sonnen, Glover Teixeira and others.
Jones himself calls the hardest fight of his career against Swedish fighter Alexander Gustafsson at UFC 165 in 2013. Jones suffered a serious face injury, but, even bleeding, won the fight and defended the title. January 2015 saw the bout that Bones had long awaited - it was a matter of honor to defeat Daniel Cormier, a UFC fighter who has never had a defeat in his entire career. And that win was the 8th title defense for the undefeated Jones.
And soon problems with the law appeared in the life of the triumphant fighter. He was preparing for a fight with Anthony Johnson in May 2015, but almost a month before that he was arrested as the initiator of an accident, receiving an 18 month suspended sentence. The UFC stripped him of his championship title and decided to disqualify him indefinitely.
At the end of the same year, Jones was reinstated in fighter status and was immediately allowed to regain the lost title in a duel with Ovins St. Prue. With a landslide victory, John returned to the top of the UFC rankings.
Bones was preparing to hold a rematch with Daniel Cormier on July 9, 2016 at UFC 200, but was suspended due to suspicion of using illegal substances. After passing the tests, experts from the anti-doping organization USADA announced that an estrogen blocker was found in Jones' blood. The athlete was stripped of his temporary title and was “prescribed” a year's suspension.
The American returned to the octagon in July 2017, a month after the funeral of his mother, who died of diabetes. John defeated Daniel Cormier after three rounds and regained the UFC light heavyweight belt. However, at the end of the year, the fight was declared invalid, since the results of tests for steroids taken immediately before the fight turned out to be positive. Jones lost the title again and "earned" the opportunity to lose qualification for 4 years.
fact
Personal life
Thanks to his religious upbringing and the positive example of his parents in his personal life, the fighter was always distinguished by his loyalty. The fighter met his permanent companion Jesse Moses while still at Endicott School. Soon, sympathy turned into a romantic relationship. But the couple was destined to part, because the young man went to college in Iowa. Here, the future UFC star had an affair with a local beauty. As a result of this connection, the first daughter of a fighter was born.
Returning to New York, John reunited in Jesse, who forgave the betrayal and soon became pregnant. The parents-to-be moved to the girl's tiny apartment, which she shared with her mother. The couple's first child, daughter Lea, was born in 2008, when Bones fought with Moises Gabin. The victory in this fight anticipated the fighter's further sporting success.
Jesse and John's second daughter, Carmen Nicole, was born in 2009, and the third, Olivia Haven, in 2013. In the same year, Jones made a long-awaited proposal to his common-law wife. Each family photo of the idol is met with delight by fans on Instagram. Jones himself has idols: in his speeches, he repeatedly said that he was inspired by the example of the Irish fighter Conor McGregor.

John Jones now
At the end of September 2018, USADA finally made a decision on the fate of John Jones, caught doping in July 2017. The ex-champion received a 15-month suspension. Accordingly, the ban on performances was lifted on 28 October 2018.
It is now known that the genius light heavyweight will face Alexander Gustafsson at the UFC 232 tournament, which will be held on December 29 in Las Vegas.
