His mother suffering from squizophrenia, Jonathan Caouette was raised by his grandparents, both comedians, in the very conservative capital of Texas, Houston. From the age of 8, he shot his first short films, an activity he pursued throughout his adolescence, directing "The Ankle Slasher" (1987), "The Techniques and Sciences of Eva" (1988) and "Pig Nymph" (1990). Openly homosexual, diagnosed with a depersonalization disorder, he quickly became fascinated by the themes of identity, discrimination and duality, which run through all his works.

At the same time as directing, he made his acting debut in local productions, notably playing a schizophrenic in "Salomé" and a homosexual in Jesus Christ Superstar, two roles he found in the musical "Godspell". After having been trained intensively at the American Academy Of Dramatic Arts in New York, he continued his exploration of cult musicals (notably by joining the troops of the Rocky Horror Picture Show and Hair), while appearing in a few television spots for the MTV channel.

However, it was not until 2003 and the release of Tarnation that Jonathan Caouette became known to the general public. Produced by Gus Van Sant and John Cameron Mitchell, edited using Apple's IMovie software on a simple computer, this documentary brings together videos of various formats shot by the young director since the age of eleven. Original in its form and violent in its substance, this autobiographical work is very warmly received at the various festivals where it is presented, including the Sundance Film Festival and the Cannes Film Festival.

Despite this success, Jonathan Caouette does not stay behind the camera, but appears in a few short and feature films, including the comedies Fat Girls (2006) and Shortbus (id.) Which allow him to reconnect with the themes of sexual freedom and discrimination. As a director, his work is in line with Tarnation in that it explores the tastes, sensibilities and memories of the filmmaker. We owe him the documentary All Tomorrow's Parties (2009) on the music festival of the same name, as well as a more personal documentary on his mother's illness, Walk away Renée (2011).
