Born in Washington, Jonathan Banks followed a classic educational path until he entered Indiana University. There, he meets Kevin Kline and together, begin to perform on small stages of the theater. Finally, Banks leaves the university to follow a troupe as a stage manager and flies to Australia.


In 1974, he moved to Los Angeles to focus on his acting career, which began on television in the TV movie The Macahans (1976). Very quickly recognized in the world of the small screen, Banks goes on filming and manages to make his film debut in 1978 in no less than three films: The Return, The Private of These Ladies and The Warriors of Hell, through small roles. Solicited for comedy as well as for drama, for action as for thriller, Banks multiplies appearances on the big screen in several mainstream, even cult films, such as Is there a pilot in the plane ? (1980), 48 Heures (1982) and Gremlins (1984).


Between 1987 and 1990, Jonathan Banks landed a regular role in the detective series Un Cop dans la Mafia for four seasons. With no downtime in his career, he continues to switch from one genre to another such as action (High Speed ​​Trap, 1995), family film (Flipper, 1996), thriller (Proximity, 2001) and adventure comedy (Crocodile Dundee 3, id.). At the same time, the actor is present on a very large number of series, for one or two episodes, notably in Alias ​​(2002), Les Experts (2005), Urgences (2007), Cold Case: affaires classified (2008) , Castle (2009) or Modern Family (2010).


2009 is a crucial year in his career, since he joined the phenomenon series Breaking Bad for one episode, before his character became recurring for seasons 3, 4 and 5. He played Mike, a retired policeman who had been converted in drug trafficking by becoming Gustavo Fring's henchman. A remarkable performance that makes him known to the general public. Banks then continues with new appearances in series, including a very noticed in the success Community where he plays Professor Buzz Hickey, extravagant and full of humor, who participates in all the absurd investigations of Jeff (Joel McHale).


Despite this strong television activity, the actor does not forget the cinema, since he is notably on the bill in the comedies Arnaque à la carte (2013), Authors Anonymous (2014) and Comment killing son boss 2 ( id.).
