Biography

John Hurt is a true Englishman with a distinctive appearance and undeniable acting ability, who has played many emotional and vibrant roles. He has won four BAFTA awards, won a Golden Globe, twice competed for an Academy Award and even received a knighthood. Each of Hurt's roles has been original and gripping, but he is best known for his roles in The Midnight Express, Alien, The Elephant Man, and Melancholy.

John Hurt was born in the small English town of Chesterfield on January 22, 1940. The father of the future star, Arnold Hurt, studied mathematics professionally for some time, but later chose the path of a priest of the Church of England and became the vicar of Shirbrook. John's mother, Phyllis Hurt, was an engineer by profession, but she also enjoyed working in an amateur theater.

In addition to John, the family had the eldest son Michael, who later became a Catholic priest. Also, the parents of the future star took in the upbringing of an adopted child - a girl Monica. In his youth, John had the usual rigor and tough discipline. The father often limited his children even in communicating with other children, if he considered them insufficiently religious and educated.

From the age of eight, Hurt studied at an Anglican school (Kent). Once the boy took part in the theatrical production "The Blue Bird". He was so carried away by acting that he decided to become an actor in the future. Parents knew about their son's hobby, but did not approve of John's choice. Instead, they recommended that the boy become an art teacher.

After completing his secondary education, 17-year-old Hurt went to the Grimsby Art School. A little later, in 1959, the motivated guy received a scholarship and continued his studies in the capital - at St. Martin's College. But a year later, John overcame a harsh competition and got into the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts. Two years later, a graduate of a prestigious educational institution began to receive the first roles.

Carier start

For the first time John Hurt appeared on television in the film "Wild and Thirsty" (1962). This was followed by other minor roles, but little by little the young actor gained valuable experience and became recognizable. He played in projects of a very different plan. So, Hurt starred in the historical BBC project "I, Claudius" (1976), where he played Emperor Caligula.

1978 brought the promising actor a spectacular role in the thriller Midnight Express, directed by Alan Parker. Subsequently, the film won six Golden Globes and two Oscars. For his role, Hurt received a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor and a BAFTA. John also fought for the Oscar, but was forced to yield to Christopher Walken.

Also early in his career, John Hurt starred in the fantasy horror film Alien (1979). He was assigned the role of Kane's security officer, who was possessed by an Alien embryo. In general, this film became in some way epoch-making, received many awards, including an Oscar, and also gave rise to a series of famous films with Sigourney Weaver.

In 1980, Hurt was assigned the main role in the drama "The Elephant Man" by cult director David Lynch. His acting skills were again awarded an Oscar nomination. Four years later, the talented actor played the role of Winston Smith - the central figure in George Orwell's famous novel "1984".

1991 saw Hurt's next BAFTA nomination. He played a small role in Jim Sheridan's The Field, but his excellent performance was worthy of such a solid award.

An important stage in John Hurt's film career was his participation in the filming of the Harry Potter series. So, in 2001, the talented actor appeared in the film "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone". He brilliantly played the role of Ollivander, a wand maker. In addition, in 2010, several episodes with Hurt's character were filmed for the film "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows".

The talented actor has repeatedly worked on dubbing films. For example, in 2006, he acted as an invisible storyteller in the film Perfume: The Story of a Murderer. In addition, Hurt often voiced cartoons for children: "The Lord of the Rings" (1978), "Kingdom of the Apes" (1999), "The Adventures of Tigger" (2000), etc.

The filmography of the famous actor also includes participation in the film adaptation of the story of Indiana Jones. In 2008, Hurt appeared in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, where he played the archaeologist and friend of the protagonist Harold Oxley.

In addition, filming began this year on the BBC fantasy series Merlin. It was based on the legends of the wizard Merlin, as well as his relationship with King Arthur. At the same time, Hurt was assigned one of the important roles - the Great Dragon. The series was very popular with British television viewers, until 2012 it had five seasons.

Even at an advanced age, Hurt continued to act annually. Often he was assigned the role of minor characters, but his emotional and eccentric characters have always been remembered by viewers. For example, in 2013, Hurt played the Military Doctor in the hit TV series Doctor Who.

Until his death, Hurt worked on several projects at once. In 2016, he was featured in the action movie Tarzan. Legend". The dramas "My Name Is Lenny", "Hypergraphia", as well as the historical film "A Difficult Time" are planned for 2017-2018.

Note that John Hurt was often compared with another, no less eminent actor Ian McKellen. Their external resemblance and almost the same height aroused interest both among viewers and directors. In one interview, McKellen told a funny story from the filming of The Hobbit. When he argued with director Peter Jackson, the latter often shouted that he was tired of "naughty McKellen" and demanded to call John Hurt. Ian once replied that he was John Hurt and had gotten rid of McKelen long ago, but no one noticed.

This was followed by the actor's long relationship with model Marie-Lise Volpelier-Pirro. They met for 15 years, and only the tragic death of a Frenchwoman in 1983 separated the couple.

The second time the actor married at the end of 1984, the actress Donna Peacock. The star couple wanted to have children, but even artificial insemination did not help them. This led to the dissolution of the celebrity marriage in January 1990. The man did not stay alone for long and a few days later he married Joe Dalton, an assistant director. The couple had two boys, but the children could not keep their parents together. In 1996, John Hurt divorced his third wife.

After that, the famous actor remained single for a long time. Only in 2005 did Hurt decide to marry for the fourth time, and his choice fell on Anwen Rhys Meyers. By profession, the woman was an advertising producer.
