Biography

Bassist of the rock band Queen John Deacon played in the band from its foundation until the tragic death of its vocalist Freddie Mercury. He combined musical talent with technical ability and financial literacy, becoming an integral and respected member of the team.

fact

Childhood and youth

The musician was born on August 19, 1951 in the English city of Leicester. After 5 years, John had a sister, Julia. The head of the Deacon family worked for an insurance company.

At the age of 7, his parents gave the boy a red plastic guitar "Tommy Steele". But at that time he was more interested not in music, but in electronics. The young inventor read magazines and then designed his own devices. He managed to improve the old reel-to-reel tape recorder, turning it into a recording device. John listened to the radio and recorded everything.

When his son was 9 years old, his father moved the family to the town of Odby. Here they settled in a dormitory, and the boy began to go to Gartree Gymnasium, then to Bitcham College with a humanitarian bias. Studying was easy, and the student achieved high results.

The first musical idols for the future guitarist were The Beatles. Thanks to the Liverpool Four, Deacon felt an interest in music. He listened to "Love Me Do", "Please Please Me", "Ask Me Why" and other songs and dreamed of playing the same way.

A long way to a dream began. First you need a professional instrument, and weeks have come between John and the guitar with the morning papers in hand. Having earned the required amount, the young man began to master the science of music.

In 1965, a high school student organized a group with the expected name for a teenager "The Opposition", which a year later renamed "The New Opposition". In the team, he first played the rhythm guitar, and then, after the bass player left, he retrained and remained faithful to the instrument all his life. Deacon bought his first bass guitar "EKO" for £ 22. - his.

The frontman's departure is connected with an invitation to London to study at the Chelsea Technical College, which is a part of the "Imperial College London". The young man left, leaving his bass guitar, amplifier and old life in his hometown. However, six months later, he realized that he could not live without music, and asked my mother to send the equipment.

Back in his student years, Deacon heard the performance of the then beginning group Queen, which did not make any impression on him. At that time, he lived with a new desire - to create his own team and play. The young man carried it out quickly enough. The new brainchild of the musician - the group "Deacon", played the first concert and ceased to exist. This is because the guitarist was hired by Queen, and a new stage began in his biography.

Music

There are two versions of how John Deacon got into Queen. According to the first, the young man regularly looked through advertisements for recruiting musicians in the local newspaper and thus one day came to audition for the team. According to the second, the musicians met at a disco in college. The team was looking for a bass player, and the puzzle came together. Roger Taylor, Brian May and Freddie Mercury immediately appreciated the talent of the future colleague and his knowledge in electronics, as well as emotional balance.

At that time, Deacon was 19 years old, and he turned out to be the youngest of the Queen members. Despite his age, the young man easily bypassed 7 applicants for the bass player's place and established himself in the group. The first concert featuring a new member of the team took place on July 2, 1971 at the College of Property Management in Kensington.

In 1973 the group released their debut studio album of the same name, Queen. The influence on the musicians of that time of hard rock and heavy metal is clearly visible. The lyrics were written by everyone except John, and were based on a variety of themes, including folklore and religion.

In fact, the material for recording was already ready in 1972, and the record companies did not want to take on it for a whole year. Meanwhile, the musicians have already begun to prepare a new collection, which was released a year later. Over time, Deacon, like the rest of the group, began writing songs. His first work found a place on the 3rd album "Sheer Heart Attack". But the track called "Misfire" was not particularly popular with the public.

The first hit by John Deacon was included in the 4th album "A Night at the Opera" and was called "You're My Best Friend". The musician dedicated the song to his wife Veronica and wrote it in the year of their wedding. An interesting fact is that the composition contains an electric piano, on which the bassist initially suggested that Freddie play, but he flatly refused, calling it "tiny and terrible".

After that, John had to take the instrument home and learn to play it. A simple, uncomplicated video was shot for the song, which did not prevent it from becoming one of the best Queen videos of the glam-rock period.

Album "A Night at the Opera" went platinum four times and entered the "500 Greatest Albums of All Time" by Rolling Stone magazine. The 6-minute (among the standard 3-minute) "Bohemian Rhapsody" became a cult composition. Several genres are mixed in it: rock, pop music and opera. After the success, photos of the musicians and articles about them began to appear in magazines.

Unlike other members of the collective, Deacon wrote little, but many of his creations became known and loved by music lovers around the world. These include "Spread Your Wings", "Another One Bites the Dust", "I Want to Break Free" and others.

“Another One Bites the Dust” is translated as “Another One Bites the Dust”. After its release, the song topped 3 American charts at once, and the single became the best-selling single in the United States and in the world. It is noteworthy that John played almost all the instruments that sound in the composition.

Bass guitarist Deacon's skills grew rapidly. He was highly appreciated not only by the audience, but also by his colleagues. Besides playing the guitar professionally, he was in charge of Queen's equipment. A talented technician, he made the "Deacy Amp", which was used by himself and later by Brian May.

The most balanced member of the team combined another talent - the ability to handle finances. The musician was in charge of the financial affairs of the team almost from the very beginning, performing the functions of an internal controller, administrator and even an accountant.

In the 80s, in various interviews, Deacon said that he wanted to play in other projects besides Queen. He eventually took part in the recording of the Man Friday & Jive Junior single "Picking Up Sound" and also played with The Immortals. In addition, he worked with Elton John, took part in the recording of the soundtrack for the movie "Biggles: Adventures in Time".

After the death of Freddie Mercury in 1991, the musician firmly announced his departure from the group. His last performance with Queen was his performance at the London charity concert in memory of the vocalist. One more time he appeared on stage with the team in 1997. Then a memorial concert took place, following which they recorded the only song without the participation of Mercury - "No-One but You (Only the Good Die Young)".

4 years later, Brian May and Roger Taylor recorded a remake of "We Are The Champions", which was performed by Robbie Williams. The Sun then published an interview where the former bassist stated:

In October 2018, Brian Singer's Bohemian Rhapsody was released. This is a biographical picture about the Queen soloist. The main roles are played by Rami Malek (Freddie Mercury), Gwilym Lee (Brian May), Ben Hardy (Roger Taylor), John Deacon was played by Joseph Mazzello.

Personal life

The rocker's personal life is characterized by enviable constancy. John was married in his youth (in 1975) to the polka Veronica Tetzlaff. The girl worked as a teacher and grew up in a strict Catholic family. Her parents were very surprised when her daughter said that she was pregnant and not married.

Young people quickly formalized a relationship, and after a while their first-born was born. In total, 6 children were born in the marriage: 5 sons (Robert, Michael, Joshua, Luke, Cameron) and daughter Laura.
