Biography
Raised in a strict Catholic and military culture, the young John Cameron Mitchell quickly emancipated himself in contact with writing and acting. From the mid-1980s to the early 2000s, he made many small appearances on the screen while scribbling pages of scripts that he dreamed of seeing transposed onto film.
Making no secret of his homosexuality and his fascination with matters of sex in general, John Cameron Mitchell revealed himself in 2001 with the crazy Hedwig and the Angry Inch, a feature film that he directed, wrote and in which he played the main role. Awarded at Sundance, Grand Prix du Jury at Deauville, the film imposes an extraordinary personality which will then take five long years to confirm. After having produced the UFO Tarnation in 2004 and directed video clips for the Bright Eyes or the Scissor Sisters, John Cameron Mitchell made his big cinematic comeback in 2006 with the sulphurous Shortbus, a comedy that deals with sex in a funny way, intelligent and moving.
