Biography
John Badham was born in England, in Luton, in 1939. However, he grew up in the USA, in Alabama before studying at Yale University. He made his debut as a director for television in the early 70s.
After having proven himself on the small screen by directing in particular episodes of the Streets of San Francisco or Kung Fu, the filmmaker achieved a certain consecration from his first feature film for the cinema, Saturday Night Fever. The film quickly becomes a symbol of disco and allows this music to cross borders. He also made John Travolta an international star, the latter even gleaning an Oscar nomination for best actor for his performance.
Two years later, Badham changes register by staging his version of Dracula, with Frank Langella in the role of the famous Count and Laurence Olivier in that of Van Helsing. In 1983, the director continued his momentum by releasing the cult War Games, revealing a young Matthew Broderick as a computer hacker passionate about video games.
The filmmaker, king of the 80s, then directs Roy Scheider in Tonnerre de feu and Kevin Costner in the drama The Price of the Exploit in 1985. The director likes to touch all genres, but will focus on thriller and comedy action at the end of the 80s and the beginning of the 90s. He will stage successively cult films like Close Surveillance, Like a bird on the branch with Mel Gibson or The strong way with Michael J. Fox and James Woods.
John then hires Bridget Fonda as a killer in Code name: Nina before sending Wesley Snipes parachuting into the impressive Drop Zone, released in 1995. He then continues with Murder in suspense; in it, Johnny Depp plays a humble accountant who finds himself caught in a terrible trap when his daughter is kidnapped in front of his eyes in order to force him to assassinate an influential politician.
The native of Luton directed his last work for the big screen in 1997 with Incognito, a thriller starring Jason Patric. He returns to what he did when he started, directing episodes of series and TV movies. Since the early 2000s, he has been a prolific television director, moving from The Shield to Proof to Support, from Despite Himself Investigator to Supernatural. In 2018, at 79, he continues to work, recently officiating on the Siren series.
