Biography
Born in Kingston upon Thames in southwest London, Joe Cole started out as a model but quickly turned to his passion: the theater. He joined the prestigious National Youth Theater in the English capital and performed in various plays. After making a few appearances in the series The Bill, Holby City and Come Fly with Me, he finds a somewhat more substantial role in the judicial series Injustice alongside James Purefoy: that of Alan, a talented young man mixed with unsavory people.
Joe Cole continues with two episodes of Skins where he plays a bad boy (more precisely a gang leader as rebellious as he is charming), a kind of character who will come back regularly in his filmography. With The Hour, the producers hire him to slip into the skin of Trevor, a fascist. In 2013, his notoriety grew when he was chosen to join the hit series Peaky Blinders where he played John, one of Tommy's brothers (Cillian Murphy). The character gains in importance over the episodes and his increased responsibilities push him to become an adult.
At the same time, Joe Cole obtains important roles in the cinema, as for example in Offender (2012), unpublished in France, where he plays a tough delinquent ending up in prison. He also tastes drama with Up & Down (2014) by Pascal Chaumeil: he takes on the outfit of the lost boy Chas, who is also the ex-boyfriend of Imogen Poots. In 2016, the young man's career took another turn when he landed the title role of A prayer before the dawn of Jean-Stéphane Sauvaire. The film tells the true story of Billy Moore, who managed to survive in Thai prison by becoming a Muay Thai boxing champion. For the needs of the role, Joe Cole, who was already practicing English boxing, engaged in a preparation of several months in Thai boxing. Presented at several prestigious festivals (including the 2017 Dinard British Film Festival in the official selection), this violent and realistic film is generally well received by critics.
Also in 2018, Joe Cole played a key role alongside Miles Teller in Thank You For Your Service, taken from David Finkel's book. The feature film does not however benefit from a release in French theaters, just like Woodshock, an independent film with Kirsten Dunst, created and directed by the sisters Kate and Laura Mulleavy, founders of the American fashion house Rodarte. Joe Cole is also in the cast of Eye on Juliet, which tells the story of a drone operator who falls in love with a young girl from the Middle East. This Kim Nguyen film should be released soon.
