Biography
The name of the British writer Joe Abercrombie is well known to fans of science fiction. Fans of this genre have probably read "The First Law", "Sea of Shards" and other works devoted to fictional worlds and the universe "Earth Circle", published in trilogies or separate books. In 2019, the author decided to return to the epic lands of the Union, Gurkhula and the North and has already handed over to the publishers the novel A Little Hate, which is the 1st part of a new series of 3 books.
fact
Childhood and youth
Joe Abercrombie was born in the British city of Lancaster on December 31, 1974. There is little information about the early biography of the future writer. It is known that he attended classes at the Royal Grammar School, intended for boys and having the status of a mid-level academy.
Spending a lot of time at the computer and board games, the teenager dreamed of non-existent worlds, enthusiastically drew schemes and maps of fictitious countries and gave names to new geographical objects.
This hobby did not interfere with education, and after successfully passing the final exams, Joe entered a prestigious educational institution - the University of Manchester. After receiving a degree in psychology, Abercrombie got a job as an assistant in a television company and spent days delivering newspapers, coffee and tea to more high-profile employees.
Such work did not correspond to the ambitions of the future writer, and he retired from the service, becoming a freelance editor of short videos and documentaries.
The most famous works during this period were recordings of the Chicago concert of the British pop group Keane, as well as music videos by The Killers, Barry White and Coldplay.

Books
The idea to write a book matured for a long time in Abercrombie's mind, and in the early 2000s he decided to make an old dream a reality. Based on children's fantasies and the works of famous authors, Joe created the novel Blood and Iron in 2 years of painstaking work, which later became the beginning of the First Law trilogy.
Attempts to sell what he wrote at first did not bring results, and only after a couple of years of walking around Abercrombie publishers, luck smiled. Gollancz employee Gillian Redfirn became the “Guardian Angel” that contributed to the signing of the long-term contract. The young woman was so imbued with the story of the adventures of the barbarian philosopher Logen Nine-Fingered that she advised Joe to develop this character and make the character the protagonist of subsequent books.
Having listened to the opinion of a new acquaintance, the aspiring author wrote 2 more novels, and in 2007-2008 the readers were introduced to Before They Hang and The Last Argument of Kings. The trilogy was completed and, having received recognition in the writer's homeland, was released outside the UK and caught the eye of the committee of the world science fiction council Worldcon.
As a result, Blood and Iron was nominated for the John W. Campbell Prize, awarded annually to the best young science fiction writer. The fact that the 2008 prize went to American Mary Robinette Koval did not upset Abercrombie, but, on the contrary, became an incentive to develop and write new works.
Drawing inspiration from the books of renowned English-language authors James Elroy and Bernard Cornwell, Joe wrote a series that continued to introduce readers to the Earth Circle universe. Between 2009 and 2016, British publishers published Better Served Cold, Heroes and Red Country, as well as Sharp Shards, a collection of short stories, and Out of the City, a stand-alone novella.

The works received rave reviews, noting the cynicism and deep psychology of the author, and in literary magazines this series was called "a delightfully evil book." Separately, critics noted the collection "Sharp Shards" and awarded it with the World Fantasy Prize in 2017.
This success allowed Abercrombie to join the team of authors who worked on the BBC Worlds of Fantasy series, and put his own name on a par with the great science fiction writers Terry Pratchet, Michael Moorcock and Tea Mieville.
At the same time, Joe expanded the bibliography with works that were far from the world of the "Earth Circle", and in 2013 the publishing company HarperCollins Publishers LLC acquired the rights to the trilogy "Sea of Shards", consisting of the novels "Half King", "Half the World" and "Half War", sold for quotations and awarded the Locus Literary Prize.
Written for readers from 12 to 18 years old, these works revealed the author's skill in a new way and were distinguished by an unpredictable plot and vivid characters. The heroes of books published from 2014 to 2015, trapped in a dark world full of betrayal and betrayal, throughout history have reincarnated into their own opposites and turned out to be not who they seemed at first.
Day 4 Interview: Joe Abercrombie
The intensity of passions that played out on the pages of each of the novels, fellow writers called a revolution in the genre of fantasy and science fiction, which is on a par with the cycle of George R. R. Martin "A Song of Ice and Fire" and its famous adaptation, the TV series "Game of Thrones".
Reacting to success and reading recognition, in an interview with reporters, Abercrombie said that he writes only those books that he himself would like to read, which is why there is so much love, betrayal, violence and adrenaline in them. But the most important thing, according to the author, are the characters, full of indomitable energy, and sharp, cynical and humorous dialogues.
fact
Personal life
There is little information about the personal life of the writer Abercrombie in open sources. It is known that Joe and his wife Lou and children Grace, Eve and Teddy live in the UK on their own estate located in Somerset County.

Sometimes the author of famous works is distracted from creativity and, in order to put his thoughts in order, he is engaged in video editing of short films, music videos and concerts.
fact
Joe Abercrombie now
At the end of 2018, Abercrombie published an annual review of his own work and noted a long hiatus from publishing. However, over the 2 years that have passed without new publications, the writer did not idle, but participated in many public events and worked on novels from the completely new trilogy "The Beautiful Machine".
At the beginning of 2019, publishers received the first piece "A Little Hate" and are looking forward to the edited versions of the next 2 parts. In February, several copies of the novel were handed over to reviewers and translators, and in the fall it will hit bookstores in the United Kingdom and the United States.
Now the editors are working on the second work of the trilogy, and the author is rewriting the final part of the last novel. On May 24, Abercrombie's Twitter posted a photo of the British cover of A Little Hate and an announcement for applications for the highly anticipated book.
