Biography
In 2011, an American remake of the Danish detective series Murder was released. This event can be called the official start of the Scandinavian noir boom at the global level. Cold landscapes and laconic characters with difficult fates fell in love with the audience, and after "Murder" followed by remakes of other Scandinavian series.
Hollywood figures did not pass by this event either. One of the first to discover the gold mine was David Fincher, who shot in 2011 a remake of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, an adaptation of the novel of the same name by Stig Larsson. Other directors followed him, starting to buy the rights to film adaptations of books by other Swedish, Norwegian and Danish detective writers, including Jo Nesbe.
fact
Childhood and youth
The future musician and writer was born (in this order he appears to others) in the largest city in Norway, which is also the capital of this country. It happened on March 29, 1960. Almost immediately after birth, the Nesbe family moved to the small town of Molde, located in the county of Mere og Romsdal.
In his youth, Yu played football - at one time he even dreamed of becoming a professional football player. The guy really showed talent in this area - at the age of seventeen, Nesbe already played for the city's national team. Because of the sporting achievements of Nesbe, the teachers let the guy get away with the irresponsible attitude to his studies. But everything changed in an instant.
During another training session, Yu seriously injured his knee ligaments. Doctors said that you can forget about a football career. Soon Nesbe graduated from school. Low grades blocked the guy's paths to enter the country's universities. Yu went to the army.
During the three years that Nesbe spent in the north of the country, repaying his debt to his homeland, the future writer decided to engage in self-education. At the same time, Yu became addicted to reading books (Ernest Hemingway and Jack London became his favorite writers of that time).
In one of the interviews, the writer mentioned that he loved literature since childhood (his mother worked as a librarian), but only when his parents read him - he himself only chose books. Yu once selected William Golding's Lord of the Flies, based on the cover, which featured a pig's head strung on a pole. Nesbe was not thrilled with the book itself and promised his father that he would definitely write a better book.
By the end of his military service, Yu raised his grades to the level at which the doors of all universities opened for him. The problem was that the guy didn't know who he wanted to study for. Therefore, he entered the prestigious Norwegian School of Economics and Business Administration, located in the city of Bergen. The profession of an economist was chosen as a future specialty.
Studying was easy for Nesba, but did not arouse much interest. The guy had a lot of free time, which most of his classmates spent on homework. In order to somehow occupy himself, Yu decided to learn to play the guitar - he learned the basics of this business while still in the army. Another student of the School of Economics found out about this and suggested creating a musical group.
The idea turned out to be successful - ten years later the songs of the group Di Derre (translated as "There with them") occupied the leading positions of the national charts. Nesbe himself had by this time moved to Oslo and managed to work as a freelance journalist and stock broker.
fact
Literature
In early 1997, Yu became depressed. The group was not doing so well, and in the firm in which Nesbe worked as an economist, layoffs began. To somehow distract himself from this, Yu took a vacation at his own expense and bought a plane ticket to Australia. Literally the day before the flight, Nesbe received a call from the editor of a glossy magazine with an offer to write him an article about his rock band. The idea seemed interesting to Yu, so he agreed and took his laptop on vacation.
However, instead of the biography of the group, it turned out to be a detective novel "Bat" (in Russia it was also published under the title "Flight of the Bat"). The plot was formed during a thirty-hour flight. Like Nesbe, suffering from time zone syndrome, Harry Hall (the protagonist of the novel) lands at the Sydney airport. He arrived in Australia to help local police investigate the murder of a Norwegian citizen.
The rough draft of Bat was finished when Yu arrived home. By this time, not a trace remained of the former depression. When the question of publishing the book arose, Nesbe decided to publish it under a pseudonym. To discuss this issue he was summoned to the publishing house. When asked about his pseudonym, Yu replied that he considered his name too famous for fellow citizens.
However, it turned out that his name is unknown to the publishers. Then Nesbe said the name of the group. One of the editors smiled and began humming the song. Another group. "Bat" was published in the same 1997 under the real name of the writer. It became the first in a series of books about the Oslo criminal police officer (in the latter parts - the National Criminal Investigation Service) Harry Hall. In 1997 and 1998 the book was awarded with the Riverton and Glass Key prizes.
Nesbe did not expect such a success - he expected that critics would blow his debut work to smithereens. But I was wrong. When Yu came to the realization that writing books could make a living, he himself quit the firm where he had worked for the past three years.
In 1998 he published the book "Cockroaches", which became a sequel to "Bat". Yu approached the writing of this work more responsibly, but the book turned out to be a little weaker than the previous one. But "Little Redneck", which was published in 2000, turned out to be an order of magnitude better - for it Nesbe received the Norwegian Booksellers' Prize in 2000 and the Norwegian Book Club Prize in 2004.
The award named after Madame Vil Nigaard was awarded to the fourth book about Hall's adventures - "Nemesis" (another version of the translation - "There was no sorrow"). For her, in 2010, the writer was nominated for the Edgar Poe Prize.
Nemesis was followed by Pentagram, Rescuer, and Snowman. After that, in order to distract himself from his hero at least a little, Yu publishes collections of stories, and also begins to write a series of children's books about the adventures of the eccentric Dr. Proctor and his friends.
In 2008, the off-cycle novel "Bounty Hunters" was published, which became the starting point for the start of film adaptations of the writer's works. In 2009, there was a continuation of the adventures of detective Harry Hall - "Leopard", followed by the first "Ghost" and then "The Police" with an interval of two years. Out of cycle works at this time came "Son" and "Abduction".
Also during this period of time, the dilogy "Blood in the Snow" was published, but these books were written under the pseudonym Tom Johansen. In addition to detective stories and books for children, Yu Nesbe tried his hand at writing dramatic works for the theater - so in 2004 the play "Ninety-meter Hill" was released.
fact
Film and television
Nesbe first encountered the world of cinema in 2005 when he wrote the script for Niels Geup's television film Deadline. Five years later, the writer was named as a screenwriter for the short film Prepared by Serena Crag-Jacobsen. In 2011, the film adaptation of the novel "The Bounty Hunters" was released, directed by Morten Tildum with the participation of Axel Henney, Nikolai Coster-Waldau, Julia Olgaard and Valentina Alekseeva.
The picture was shot not only at home, but also abroad. One of the American film companies acquired the rights to shoot the remake. Nesbe's books got interested in Hollywood. In the same year the story "Dekpot" was filmed by Magnus Martens. The slogan of the painting read:
In 2013, the crime drama "I am Victor" was released, which tells about the adventures of the lawyer of the same name. Nesbe himself said that in the person of this character he wanted to find a replacement for Harry Hall, but the idea did not give the desired success.
In 2014 and 2015, the children's books by the writer - "Doctor Proctor and his magic powder" and "Doctor Proctor and his time machine" were filmed. In both cases, Arild Fröhlich was the director.
In 2015, the TV series Occupied was launched, filmed in the genre of political thriller and pseudo-history. Nesbe was the lead screenwriter. The series told about how Norway was occupied by Russia on the orders of the European Union after it decided to stop oil and gas production in the North Sea. The main role went to the actress Ingeborga Dapkunaite.
fact
Personal life
The writer does not cover his personal life. It is known that his father Per Nesbe is a World War II hero, and his mother, Kirsten Hammerwold, has worked as a librarian for almost her entire life. Yu also had a brother named Knut, but he died. Nesbe was married. In marriage, a daughter, Selma, was born. The writer divorced his wife a long time ago, but lives in Oslo - not far from her.
fact
Yu Nesbe now
In 2017, the writer published the eleventh book about Harry Hall - "Thirst".
Also 2017 was marked by the joint Anglo-Swedish-American adaptation of the novel "The Snowman". The director was Thomas Alfredson, who had previously worked on Let Me In and Spy Get Out. Prior to Alfredson, Martin Scorsese and Ridley Scott were tagged for the director's chair, but the former decided instead to film the Blood in the Snow dilogy, which tells the story of an unlucky hitman, and the latter switched to work on the films Alien. Testament "and" Blade Runner 2049 ".
In Alfredson's Snowman, the emphasis is shifted from the detective component to the psychological thriller. The cast of the tape turned out to be, if not stellar, then at least famous: Michael Fassbender, Val Kilmer, Toby Jones, J.K. Simmons, James D'Arcy, Alec Newman, Rebecca Ferguson, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Chloe Sevigny.
It is known that soon there will be another screen version of the writer's work - the American version of "Jackpot" with Mila Kunis, Brian Cranston, Armie Hammer and Jennifer Garner. The director is Will Gluck ("Excellent student of easy virtue", "Friendship Sex").
