Biography
Many years ago in the English city of Blackpool, musician Ian Anderson organized the Jethro Tull group, specializing in the performance of blues-rock compositions. Since then, the group, which has changed styles and directions several times, has presented the world with about 30 studio albums and was named one of the most commercially successful and eccentric British projects by Rolling Stone magazine.
In 2014, the team leader announced his retirement, but after a while the musicians got back together to celebrate the band's 50th anniversary with a big world tour called "Ian Anderson Presents: JETHRO TULL - 50th Anniversary Tour".
fact
History of creation and composition.
In 1963, Blackpool High School students Ian Anderson, Jeffrey Hammond and John Ewan, inspired by The Beatles, decided to organize their own project, consisting of 2 guitarists and a drummer. Having acquired instruments, the young people started rehearsals, adopting melodies and riffs from the blues compositions popular at that time.
For a time, the band, originally called The Blades, performed in local clubs as a trio, and then drummer Barry Barlow and guitarists Mike Stevens and Chris Riley joined the lineup.
The new friends renamed themselves the John Evan Band and with the help of agent Johnny Taylor got jobs in North West England establishments, and also recorded 3 songs at Regent Sound Studios.
After playing several concerts, Hammond left the band to attend art school, and was replaced by bass player Glenn Kornick, and in place of the retired Riley Evan took a musician named Neil Smith. With this composition, the John Evan Band made their debut on the stage of the famous London club "Marks" and after the performance they realized that it was time to leave the province and move closer to the center.
In 1967, the young team took the next step in the history of creation, moved to Luton and after a while fell apart due to funding difficulties. Anderson, Kornik and new guitarist Mick Abrahams organized a separate project, which was soon joined by drummer Clive Bunker, and began playing the blues.
As it turned out, there were many such bands in London, so the musicians had problems organizing concerts. Not to be boring, Anderson and company changed names every week, appearing as "Navy Blue", "Ian Henderson Bag o 'Nails" and "Candy Colored Rain". Presenting a mediocre show to the public, the collective had little chance of reappearing in the same club, but one day the young people were lucky and they, who introduced themselves as Jethro Tull, were invited to a permanent job.
Inspired by the success, in 1968 the performers recorded the double-sided single "Sunshine Day" - "Airplane" and reunited with bassist Jeffrey Hammond. At the same time, Anderson became disillusioned with his own abilities as a guitarist and mastered the flute, which, along with a warm long coat, became the musician's calling card and later formed the basis of the permanent Jethro Tull logo.
After the release of his debut album in December 1968, Abrahams, who became the leader and frontman of the group, realized that he wanted to play different music and could not stand the busy touring schedule. Declaring that he was “fed up with this nonsense,” he left Jethro Tull and started his own band called Blodwyn Pig.
The search for a new guitarist took a long time. Candidates included David O'List, who recently left The Nice, Mick Taylor, who parted ways with John Mayall & Bluesbreakers, and Tony Iommi, who later gathered the famous Black Sabbath. As a result, the choice fell on Martin Barr, who perfectly fit into Anderson's style and manner of playing. In 1970, when the band needed a keyboard player, Ian persuaded John Ewan to return and participate in the tour and recording of new albums.
It seemed that the Jethro Tull lineup had stabilized, but unexpectedly during the tour in support of the album "Benefit" bassist Glenn Kornik left the band, motivating this decision by incompatibility of characters. His place was taken by former band member Jeffrey Hammond, who partially lost his skills in playing the instrument due to lack of practice, but suited Anderson in mood and communication style.
However, he stayed with friends for a short time and in 1975 preferred to take up painting, giving bass parts to flamenco virtuoso John Glascock, who also became the group's second vocalist. In 1979, the new member developed health problems and died unexpectedly while touring the UK and the US.
The repeated change of style in subsequent years led to the arrival of new members and the dismissal of old ones. In 1980, the last major reshuffle occurred, during which Barlow, Cornick and Iavan left Anderson, leaving the frontman with bassist Dave Pegg, guitarist Martin Barr and drummer Doan Perry.
In January 2002, the band's original line-up, including Anderson, Abrahams, Kornik and Bunker, reunited for a one-off performance in an English pub that was filmed on DVD. This is the first and only time that former members of Jethro Tull have come together on the same stage and played hits, written in 40 years of creative career.

Music
For the first time, Jethro Tull made a loud appearance at the Sunbury-on-Thames festival, receiving an enthusiastic audience and positive reviews in the press. The success prompted the musicians to release the album "This Was", which entered the top ten in the UK and US charts. In addition to the original compositions, the recording included a cover version of "Cat's Squirrel", which favorably emphasizes Abrahams' blues riffs, and a jazz piece "Serenade to a Cuckoo", which revealed Anderson's talent as a flutist.
Jethro Tull's new repertoire was shown at concerts in support of Jimi Hendrix in Scandinavia and joint performances with Led Zeppelin and Vanilla Fudge in the United States. During the break, the musicians recorded the single "Living in the past", which reached # 3 in the UK charts.
The record "Stand Up", released in September 1969, on the cover of which the photographs of the musicians were made using the woodcut technique, helped the group reach the top. All the material, with the exception of the jazz arrangement of the organ composition "Bourrée", was written by Anderson, and thanks to this, Jethro Tull moved away from the blues and began to sound completely new.
Cultivating a style defined as progressive rock, Ian, inspired by the success of We Used to Know and Nothing Is Easy, has penned several hit singles. The band then appeared on the television show Top of the Pops and recorded the album Benefit. The disc provided the group with an audience of many thousands and made it possible to collect stadiums. One of Jethro Tull's most significant performances took place in August 1970 at the British Isle of Wight Festival, which surpassed the famous Woodstock in scale.
After the tour, the band changed their line-up and at the end of 1970 released the album "Aqualung" with the famous composition "Locomotive Breath". While working, Anderson feared that the music would turn out too radical in comparison with previous recordings, but contrary to doubts, the disc hit the top ten in the United States and received a gold certificate from the RIAA, having sold over a million copies.
Critics called the album a conceptual one and greatly offended the leader of the group, who considered his own songs to be original and diverse. In response to the press, Anderson composed a suite that combined complex musical ideas with a sense of humor and lasted 43 minutes, occupying 2 sides of the new disc "Thick as a Brick".
In 1972, Jethro Tull, named the most important second-generation progressive group, took a hiatus and released a compilation of singles, B-sides and outtakes, allowing new fans to experience the early work of Anderson's team. This boosted the popularity of the musicians and contributed to the commercial success of the albums A Passion Play (1973), War Child (1974) and Minstrel in the Gallery (1975).
In the late 1970s, Jethro Tull began interacting with the folk-rock movement and released 3 albums influenced by the Fairport Convention group. Songs from the Wood (1977), Heavy Horses (1978) and Stormwatch (1979) received critical acclaim and provided the musicians with a full-scale European tour.
In the 1980s, the band recorded a record called "A" and began producing video clips that included staged scenes and footage from live concert performances. In parallel, the musicians worked on a new sound, which was dominated by electronic instruments and programmed rhythm sections.
As a result of experiments, Jethro Tull presented the album "Under Wraps", famous for the tracks "Lap of Luxury" and "Automotive Engineering". After that, the composer and soloist Anderson had problems with his throat, and the team took a creative break for 3 years.
After her return, Jethro Tull won the Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock / Metal Project and expanded the discography with the compilation 20 Years of Jethro Tull and the records Crest of a Knave, Rock Island and Catfish Rising, the last of which was a return to the blues, animated by mandolin, acoustic guitar and the constant flute.
In 2011, Ian Anderson officially announced the closure of the project, but a year later he released a solo album "Thick as a Brick 2: Whatever Happened to Gerald Bostock?", Which featured former Jethro Tull members: bassist David Goody and keyboardist John O'Hara ...

Jethro Tull now
In 2017, Ian Anderson, together with musicians John O'Hara, David Goudier, Florian Opale and Scott Hammond, organized a project called "Jethro Tull by Ian Anderson". His goal was to revive the popularity and perform concerts dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the team from Blackpool.
The Jethro Tull 50th Anniversary Tour started in the Danish city of Aalborg and is now continuing in Europe. In 2019, Anderson and company plan to play at venues in the Czech Republic, Italy and Germany, and then visit North America.
The musicians announce the track list of concerts and dates of performances on the Jethro Tull website, as well as on the official page on Instagram and other social networks.
