Biography
A graduate of IDHEC, Jean-Pierre Améris returned to his hometown, Lyon, to make three short films there in 1987, including Intérim, which won him the Grand Prix of the Clermont-Ferrand Festival the following year. It was in 1992 that he directed his first feature, Le Bateau de mariage, the story of a teacher under the Occupation. The film is selected in several international festivals, and obtains, among others, the Youth Prize at the Tübingen Festival.
Jean-Pierre Améris then alternates between fictions and documentaries, before delivering The Confessions of the Innocent, awarded several times at the Cannes Film Festival in 1996: Prix de la Semaine de la critique, Prix de la Jeunesse and Grand Rail d'or. Two years later, Maud Forget and Robinson Stévenin are the main performers of his Mauvaises frequentations, Prize for Directing at the San Sebastian Festival.
Palliative care centers and boxing clubs serve as the backdrops for his two following films: C'est la vie (2001) with Sandrine Bonnaire and Jacques Dutronc, and Lightweight (2003), an adaptation of a novel by Olivier Adam in which Nicolas Duvauchelle and Bernard Campan evolve. After having thought about transposing La Cicatrice on the big screenby Bruce Lowry, Jean-Pierre Améris sets his sights on Anne Wiazemsky's book, Je m'appelle Elisabeth, to evoke a theme that is dear to him: childhood.
Benoît Poelvoorde and Isabelle Carré are two shy sickly under his camera in Les Emotifs anonyme, which he signed in 2010 after a TV movie, La Joie de vivre, carried by Anaïs Demoustier.
Subsequently, the filmmaker tried his hand at melodrama by adapting Victor Hugo's philosophical novel, L'Homme qui rit, where he directed a prestigious casting including Gérard Depardieu and Emmanuelle Seigner. The film is presented at the Venice Film Festival.
After which, the director makes a new period film by plunging into the end of the 19th century with Marie Heurtin, where a sick nun tries to integrate into society a deaf and blind girl. On this occasion, he again directs Isabelle Carré.
Améris recently celebrated his reunion with Benoît Poelvoorde on the occasion of his new film, A Family for Rent, a very stylized comedy, close to the social tale where a pessimistic man, like him, decides to start a family.
