Biography
Jean-Michel Carré, born July 26, 1948, abandoned his medical studies in 1968 to enter IDHEC (Institut Des Hautes Etudes Cinématographiques today FEMIS). His desire to become a filmmaker dates back to his 16th birthday when, after attending a screening of Pierrot le Fou, he discovered, he says, "the multiple writing possibilities offered by cinema."
The same year he entered IDHEC, his documentary on Cuba, produced thanks to the granting of the "green light for adventure" scholarship, was banned from broadcasting. He also participated in 1974 in the creation of the first censored film festival. This festival is an opportunity for Jean-Michel Carré to show his desire to change societies through his films. It follows the creation, with Serge Poljinski, of the company les films grain de sable whose introductory sentence, written by Jean-Michel Carré, is: "cinema is the most suitable art for political activism ".
The experimental ghetto (1975), written and directed with Adam Schmedes, is for him the beginning of a series of forty films, fiction or documentaries, all committed to denounce a fault in society. Indeed, for Jean-Michel Carré "The real job of the documentary maker is to bear witness to the place of man in the system, the one he imposes on himself as the one he invents." To make Charbons ardents (2000), a documentary on a mine in Wales with an astonishing fate, Jean-Michel Carré does not hesitate to spend a year with the miners before filming to be sure to make a documentary so close to reality as possible. His commitment as a filmmaker continued in his film production company Grain de sable, devoted first of all to the criticism of "confinement environments" (schools, hospitals, factories, prisons, etc.) but also to struggles international organizations such as Apartheid or the conflicts in the Middle East.
His investigative film, Krousk: a submarine in troubled water (TV) (2004) won him the grand jury prize of the international festival of Great News Report and Society Documentary (FIGRA). His recent documentaries, J'ai (très) mal au travail (2007) and Les Travailleu (r) ses du sexe (2010), denounce the situations of employees in companies and prostitutes. His in-depth work favors long-term in-depth work combining filming in the field and interventions by specialists.
