Biography
Son of an SNCF agent, Jean-Jacques Annaud had a taste for travel from an early age. Very early on, he developed a passion for the 7th art, earning a BTS in cinema technician at the Vaugirard School in 1962, before obtaining the Idhec diploma in the directing section. Author at 19 of his first short film, The Filmmaker's Seven Deadly Sins, he signed hundreds of advertising spots from the end of the 1960s.
In love with Africa, where he was sent as a cooperator for his military service, Jean-Jacques Annaud directed his first feature film there, produced by Jacques Perrin, La Victoire en chantant, a corrosive comedy on colonialism. Ignored in France, this first attempt won the Oscar for Best Foreign Film in 1977, which earned it the opportunity to emerge in France under the title (translated from English) Black and White in Colors. In his second feature film, Coup de tête, the filmmaker explores the world of football and its supporters. Carried by the interpretation of Patrick Dewaere, the film was hailed by critics when it was released in 1978. After this portrait of contemporary France, the filmmaker will not stop traveling in space and time.
In 1981, Jean-Jacques Annaud thus produced La Guerre du feu, an evocation of the life of prehistoric men. This very daring bet (there is no dialogue) and crowned with success (César for Best Film and Best Director) marks the beginning of a fruitful collaboration with the screenwriter Gérard Brach, until his death. in 2006. In 1986, he took up another challenge: bringing Umberto Eco's medieval bestseller, The Name of the Rose, to the screen . This time, it is a César for Best foreign film ... which will come to greet this ambitious international co-production with Sean Connery. In 1992, he tackled another reputedly unsuitable novel, by filming L'Amant after Duras.
In love with adventure and discoveries, Annaud created a surprise once again in 1988 with L'Ours, an animal film that seduced young and old (he returned to this genre in 2004 with Deux frères) and in 1996 launched into a -memetry using the IMAX 3D relief process: Wings of courage. Based in Los Angeles since 1993, the filmmaker directs Brad Pitt on the occasion of a new film in the form of a trip, Seven Years in Tibet (1997), then Jude Law in the war film Stalingrad (2001). Always so unpredictable, Annaud revisits Greek mythology in His Majesty Minor, with José Garcia and Vincent Cassel, a work that sees him return to a French language that he had abandoned for almost 30 years.
Four years later, he directed an adventure film shot in Tunisia, Or Noir, in which Tahar Rahim played a rising prince in the face of rivalry from other Arab emirs. Antonio Banderas, Freida Pinto and Mark Strong are also in the game. Particularly appreciating filming in the company of animals, the director resurfaced in 2015 with The Last Wolf, a Franco-Chinese film starring a young student from China who learns to live with wolves, a mythical animal of this country.
