Biography
If he saw the cinema as "the temple of sex, with its goddesses, its guardians and its victims" , Jean Cocteau nevertheless left his mark on this art form with his imprint full of poetry. Director, actor, poet, novelist, painter, lyricist and decorator, this jack-of-all-trades was born on July 5, 1889, and he was just 6 years old when he discovered cinema and theater. Starting to write at the age of 10, he saw his first collection of poems published in 1908, shortly after being expelled from his high school for indiscipline.
Without a baccalaureate in his pocket, he began to frequent various artistic circles, even if poetry still remained his favorite form of expression, and we find it when he tried his hand at the 7th Art. A baptism of fire which also took place in 1925, with a short soberly titled Jean Cocteau fait du cinéma. An experience that went unanswered for a few years, until he tackled his first feature film: The Blood of a Poet. Here again, a title that fits perfectly with his personality, for a film that also reveals his taste for the fantastic.
Leaving the big screen for the boards during the 1930s, he also saw his cinematographic momentum a little broken by the Second World War, during which he played an ambiguous role. Accused of collaboration with the Germans, however, he wrote the scripts for Baron fantôme (1942), L'Éternal retour (1943) and Dames du Bois de Boulogne (1945), and returned behind the camera once the conflict was over, to stage his masterpiece: Beauty and the Beast, an adaptation as faithful as it is poetic of the tale of the same name.
In addition to earning him the definitive recognition of the milieu, "Beauty and the Beast" marks a turning point in Jean Cocteau's cinematographic career, since the film gives him the opportunity to direct Jean Marais, who will become his companion at the same time as his favorite actor. His very muse, since the actor will be showing in all his subsequent feature films, starting with L'Aigle à deux tête and Les Parents terribles (not to be confused with Les Enfants terribles, for which Cocteau wrote the screenplay for after his own novel, but which will be directed by Jean-Pierre Melville), which also came out at the end of the decade.
Jean Marais who will also be the hero of the two following feature films by Jean Cocteau: Orphée and its sequel, Le Testament d'Orphée, released in 1950 and 1960 respectively. In the meantime, the director will have directed two short films (Coriolan and 8x8), chaired the Jury of the Cannes Film Festival in 1953, 1954 and 1957, but above all he abandoned cinema for poetry, which he never abandoned even when he transcribed his universe in images.
Back in business on the big screen in the early 1960s, he wrote the scripts for The Princess of Cleves and Thomas the Impostor but, above all, his last feature film, The Testament of Orpheus, which can also appear to be his own. Died of a heart attack on October 11, 1963, just 12 hours after Edith Piaf, for whom he had once written a play, Jean Cocteau continues to inspire the world of show business, both through his writings and his imagination.
