Biography
Born in Los Angeles, but raised in Manhattan, James Cromwell grew up in an artistic environment. He discovers his vocation in contact with his father, director John Cromwell - "blacklisted" in Hollywood in 1953, during the witch hunt - and his mother, Kay Johnson - seen in Madame Satan by Cecil B. DeMille or even The Rush by Frank Capra. After studying interpretation and directing at the University Carnégie-Mellon, he began in the theater, where he played Shakespeare as well as experimental pieces.
Before any television actor, James Cromwell has distinguished himself in many series including Arnold and Willy , Star Trek: Next Generation , Dallas or MASH. In the cinema, it was under the direction of director Robert Moore (Un corpse au dessert, Le Privé de ces dames) that he made his film debut. Discovered in comedies such as L'Homme aux deux brains (1982), Un sacré bordel! (1987) or Pink Cadillac (1990), he was named to the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for the family film Babe, the pig turned shepherd (1985). He will once again play farmer Hoggett in the sequel Babe, the Pig in the Town (1998).
In the meantime, James Cromwell makes an impression with his performances in Larry Flynt (1997), where he plays a Puritan politician, and LA Confidential (id.), Where he plays a crooked policeman. An essential supporting role, he likes to compose characters imposing respect and authority: senator in La Mutante 2 (1998), military officer in Le Déshonneur by Elisabeth Campbell (1999), judge in La Neige tombait sur les cèdres (2000 ), prison warden in The Green Line (id.), eminent scientist in I, Robot (2004) or police captain in Spider-Man 3 (2007). It is therefore quite natural that Oliver Stone offers him in 2008 to lend his features to the former American head of state George Bush, Sr. in his indictment film W. - The improbable President.
