Biography
Former student of the ENA, deputy then secretary of state in 1967, minister in 1972, prime minister in 1974, resigned in August 1976, he founded the RPR (Rassemblement pour la République) in December 1976, and was elected for the first time mayor of Paris in March 1977. In 1986, he became the Prime Minister of the first "cohabitation" with the socialist head of state François Mitterrand, he was however able to gather on his name only 45.98% of the votes in the second round of the presidential election of 1988. Party again in the race for the Elysee Palace in 1995, despite the competition of Édouard Balladur, he won in the second round, with 52.64% of the vote, against the socialist Lionel Jospin, and thus became the fifth president of the Fifth Republic.
