In a family of musicians, in the Estonian city of Viljandi, in mid-1950, Jaak Arnovich Joala was born - one of the most famous singers of the era of the decline of the USSR, the sex symbol of the Soviet stage of the 80s. The boy's mother was a musicologist by education. An intelligent woman worked at the local philharmonic department. From early childhood, she sent her beloved son to a music school, where he immediately began to make progress.

The boy attended two classes: piano and flute. In his youth, inspired by the music of The Beatles, Jaak creates his own rock and roll ensemble, for which he needed to master the playing of the bass guitar and drums. Therefore, entering a music school, the young man was a fully formed musician with his own taste. His love for Western culture was also expressed in his passion for karting: Jaak was a fan of racing in sports cars.

He did not study at the school for a long time, since the constant participation in rock concerts and missing lectures aroused indignation among the management of the school. Yaak was expelled quickly enough, after which the young man was forced to immediately go to the army. He served in Tallinn and often performed at the city's venues during army concerts. Since by this time the young musician was known to a large number of Estonian youth, concerts with his participation were always sold out. The charming and charismatic singer was liked by his peers.

After serving in the armed forces, the young singer returns to civilian life with the firm intention of continuing to play his favorite rock and roll and creates the group "Lainer". He combines successful performances at concerts with solo trips to the "Tippmeloodia", "Tallinn-Tartu", "Vilnius Towers" competitions.

The successful young man takes part in the work of several more musical groups: "Kristallid", "Virmalised", where he not only sings, but also plays many musical instruments. And the greatest success was accompanied by his joint performances with the group "Radar", which became known not only in Estonia, but also abroad.

A turning point for the soloist Jaak Joala was 1975, when he managed to receive an award at the Polish competition for young performers in the city of Sapot. The young performer performed so successfully in Europe that he was even offered cooperation with a British production center. But the artist refused the offer, due to the presence of the Iron Curtain in the country.

Nevertheless, the famous Soviet composers of that time David Tukhmanov, Raymond Pauls and Alexander Zatsepin became interested in his person. Joala began to appear on CT with new songs that were to the taste of Soviet listeners. But the singer himself was especially fond of Tukhmanov's song cycle "Photos of Beloved". According to Yaak, these were the best songs that he ever sang. Among other hits of this time, one can single out the compositions "I paint", "I will select music", "Love chooses us".

Cinematography played an important role in the artist's creative biography. A young, tall, slender artist (height - 170 cm, weight - 72 kg) is invited to the main roles in the films "Duet-Duel", "Doubles". In them, he not only acts as a film actor, but also records a large number of songs.

It was through cinema that all-Union recognition came to Jaak Joale: in 1979, a promising Estonian was invited to record the musical compositions of the film "June 31". After the release of the film, Jaak Yoala, among the other characters in the film, woke up famous. The "Song of the Year-80" Festival award consolidated this dizzying success. And a year later, Estonia recognized Jaak Joalu as Honored Artist of the Republic.

In addition to recording at all-Union music studios, concerts in the USSR and filming in films, Jaak does not miss the opportunity to light up in his native Estonia. He gladly takes part in the creation of the musicals "West Side Story" by L. Bernstein and "Summer Residents" by Y. Winter, which are staged by the State Drama Theater of Tallinn. It was the theatrical musical art that, once in a distant childhood, carried little Jaak into the world of music. The kid loved to the sounds of the operas "La Traviata" and "Rigoletto" to imagine himself an opera singer and sing along with his favorite characters.

With the collapse of the USSR, Jaak Joala abruptly disappears from the central channels. Only the beloved Lavender, which he sang together with Sofia Rotaru in the mid-80s at the Blue Light, remains on the air of television. But the musician himself settles for permanent residence in Estonia.

He devotes himself to teaching at his own school, produces young performers, is engaged in the protection of singers' copyright under the auspices of the Gramex public organization.

Jaak Joala made his last appearance on the stage as a soloist in 1996 with the Estonian tenor trio together with his friends musicians Tõnis Mägi and Ivo Linna. 

The singers presented a program called "Let all that is good remain." After a number of concerts, the musician announced the end of his solo career and left the stage forever. He was quite satisfied with the semi-reclusive lifestyle in a private house on a farm.

Jaak Joala tied the knot from an early age. His first chosen one was a girl named Doris, who worked as an actor in her youth. On the set of the film "Duet-Duel" the young people began an affair, and soon they got married. In 1974, the loving spouses had a son, Yanar. 

After a while, the artist's personal life turned the other way. While preparing for a concert with the Estonian choir Tõnu Kaljuste, the then popular Jaak met the soloist of this ensemble, Maire and charmed her.

The singer played his second wedding when he was 31 years old. The couple lived together for over thirty years, but they did not have children. The only son from his first marriage gave the artist a granddaughter Carmen. Since Jaak was not particularly close with his former family, he saw the baby only twice in his life. In recent years, the singer and his second wife lived in different places, rarely meeting. Maire preferred to spend time at the farm, and the aged musician loved to walk along the streets of the Old Town in Tallinn.

In 2005, for the first time, the singer experienced serious health problems. His heart suddenly refused. Doctors suggested that this was due to his passion for alcohol, since this bad habit has been preserved by the artist since his youth. A year later, more strokes followed: cerebral hemorrhage and myocardial infarction. Health has fallen sharply.

Jaak Arnovich was forced to come to grips with his health. He completely relieved himself of all social responsibilities and lived peacefully until 2011, until the third heart attack finally knocked him down. The singer lasted three more years, after which he passed away. The cause of death was heart failure. Singer's death date: September 25, 2014. Jaak Joala was buried in Tallinn. The years of his life are engraved on the grave of the Estonian legend: 1950-2014.
