Biography
Hollywood directors have long noticed that actors and actresses with roots of different nationalities look more advantageous against the background of "purebreds": Keanu Reeves, Dwayne Johnson, Adrian Brody, Scarlett Johansson, Mila Kunis and Vera Farmiga - this is not a complete list that confirms the above statement ... Isabelle Adjani, a French actress and singer, can continue this list.
fact
Childhood and youth
The future star of theatrical stages and movie screens was born on June 27, 1955 in the Seventeenth arrondissement of the French capital. Algerian Mahhamed Sharif Ajani and his wife, German Augusta, named their newborn daughter Isabel Yasmina.
The girl's acting talents manifested themselves early, therefore, being a sixth grade student of high school, Isabelle had already played in amateur theater, and performed her first film role at the age of 14.
fact
Movies
Adjani's film debut took place in the film by Bernard Tablanc-Michel "The Little Coal Miner", in which the girl starred during the holidays. Isabelle got the role of Rosie, a capricious girl who does not want to go to summer camp and opposes it in every possible way.
In 1970, the shooting of the second film with the participation of the young actress began - "Faustin and the Beautiful Summer" by Nina Companez ("The Story of Kolino the Skirt", "Like Roulette", "I Love You As Before"). The tape itself was released a year later.
In 1972, Isabelle signed a contract with the Reims People's Theater and began acting in productions directed by Robert Hossein (Les Miserables, I Killed Rasputin, The Vampire of Dusseldorf). The most popular performance of that time with Ajani's participation was The House of Bernarda Alba, based on the work of the new wave playwright Federico Garcia Lorca.
In 1974, the actress received an invitation to work in the famous Comedy Française, which she left almost immediately, sensing something was wrong with the proposed contract. To have at least some means of subsistence, the girl starred in the television movie "The Secret of the Flemings" by Robert Vali, which tells about the attempts of fifteenth-century artists to unravel the mystery of Jan van Eyck's oil paints.
After that, Adjani returned to the big screen, starring in Claude Pinoto ("Angry", "Boom", "Student") in the film "Slap". The actress was accompanied on the set by Lino Ventura, Annie Girardeau and Francis Perrin.
In 1975, Isabelle played the role of Victor Hugo's daughter in The Story of Adele G., which tells how a girl exchanged her homeland for unhappy love and life in a foreign land. The film was directed by François Truffaut, who became famous for the films Mississippi Siren, Four Hundred Beats and the screen version of Ray Bradbury's cult novel Fahrenheit 451. A year later, The Story of Adele G. was nominated for an Oscar.
In addition to being nominated for a prestigious film award, 1976 for Ajani was marked by work on the film The Tenant by Roman Polanski (Rosemary's Baby, Chinatown, The Ninth Gate). Polanski's painting was an adaptation of The Phantom Dweller, written by Roland Ax, with whom Isabelle is yet to play in one tape.
The Tenant was followed by Walter Hill's Driver (Supernova, Lonely Hero, The Unstoppable) with Ryan O'Neal, Bruce Dern and Roni Blackley. The picture told the story of a professional driver who became an unwitting accomplice in a robbery.
In 1978, the film “Nosferatu: The Phantom of the Night” by Werner Herzog (“Aguirre, God's Wrath”, “Saving Dawn”) was released worldwide. Herzog's tape was a kind of remake of Friedrich Murnau's Nosferatu: Symphony of Horror (1922), with the only difference that the characters in the new film were named from the original book Dracula by Bram Stoker, which in fact were both films.
After a three-year hiatus, Ajani returned to the cinema to co-star with Sam Neal in Andrzej уuławski's Obsessed (The Third Part of the Night, On the Silver Planet, Loyalty). For her participation in this film, Isabelle received the award of the French national film award "Cesar", as well as the prize of the International Cannes Film Festival.
A year later, the actress could be seen in the title role in the film "Antonieta" by Carlos Saura ("Raise the Crow", "Carmen", "I, Don Juan"). The tape told about a journalist writing biographies of women with a difficult fate.
In 1983, Adjani starred in Jean Becker's Summer of Killing (Dialogue with My Gardener, Two Days to Kill, Blank Slate), an adaptation of the detective story of the same name by Sebastian Japrizo. For her role in this film, the actress received her second Cesar Prize.
Also in 1983, Isabelle released her first music album.
Two years after Summer of Killing, Isabelle played for Luc Besson (The Fifth Element, Arthur and the Miniputes, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets) in the film Subway. Adjani's partners on the set were Christopher Lambert and Jean Reno. In 1987, she co-starred with Warren Beatty and Dustin Hoffman in the comedy Ishtar by Elaine May (New Leaf, Heartbreak, Mickey & Nicky).
A year later, Isabelle, together with Gerard Depardieu and Madeleine Robinson, played in the film adaptation of the book by Rene-Marie Paris "Camille Claudel" by Bruno Nuitten. This picture brought the actress the third "Cesar", the second nomination for the "Oscar" and the prize of the Berlin Film Festival.
In 1994, after a long hiatus, Ajani returned to the screens again, starring in the film "Queen Margot" by Patrice Chereau ("The Wounded Man", "Those Who Love Me Will Go by Train", "His Brother"). Shero's film was an adaptation of the book of the same name by Alexandre Dumas, which tells about the sister of King Charles the Ninth, and brought Isabelle another "Cesar".
Two years later, Adjani co-starred with Sharon Stone with Jerimaya S. Chechik (Vault 13, Shadowhunters, Criminal Minds) in the remake of Henri-Georges Clouzot's The Devils. Clouseau's film, so beloved by the master of suspense Alfred Hitchcock, was in turn an adaptation of the detective work of the famous writing duo Pierre Boileau and Tom Narsejak. In addition to Ajani and Stone, Katie Bates and Chazz Palminteri also starred in The Devil.
In 1997, Isabelle became a member of the jury at the Cannes Film Festival. Again a break and again Isabelle's return to the screens - this time in "Repentance" by Letizia Masson ("For Sale", "Love Me") with Sami Frey and Sami Naseri - the star of the comedy franchise Taxi.
2008 - the drama "The Last Lesson" by Jean-Paul Lilienfeld ("Contract for a Child", "Four Promising Babies"), for which Ajani received the fifth Cesar Prize. In the same year, Isabelle played the role of Margarita - the heroine of Bulgakov's The Master and Margarita - in the photo project of the same name.
2010 was marked by the release of the comedy "The Last Mammoth of France" with famous French actors Gerard Depardieu and Benoit Poulvord. In the same year, Ajani became a Knight of the Legion of Honor. In 2014, together with Vanessa Paradis and Laetitia Casta, she starred in the film by Audrey Dana, director If I Were a Man, Beauties in Paris. Also in 2014, Isabelle became Commander of the Order of Arts and Letters.
fact
Personal life
Although Adjani has never been officially married, she has two children - sons Barnabe (1980) and Gabril-Kane (1995) from director Bruno Nuitten and actor Daniel Day-Lewis, respectively.
It is also known that in 2002 the actress was going to marry the French multi-instrumentalist Jean-Michel Jarre, however, upon learning of his betrayal, she changed her mind.
Despite the years, Isabelle looks young enough. An important role in this is played by the actress's pleasant appearance, because of which she is often compared to Monica Bellucci and Sophie Marceau - you can verify this by looking at the photos that Ajani posts on her Instagram page.
