The American poet Allen Ginsberg, along with fellow literary craft Jack Kerouac and William Burroughs, is considered the founder of the beat generation. His works are distinguished by anarchist moods, freedom of thought, "sexual liberalism." The values celebrated in Ginsberg's poem "Howl" in the 1960s gave impetus to the development of the US counterculture.

Irwin Allen Ginsberg was born on June 3, 1926 in Newark, New Jersey. His father Luis Ginsberg, a Jew, taught philosophy and wrote poetry, and his mother Naomi Livergant worked as a school teacher. The family brought up two children - Irwin and his older brother Eugene (born in 1921).

The boys' mother suffered from a mental disorder that manifested itself in the form of paranoid delusions. So, Naomi argued that eavesdropping devices were installed in the house. Probably, the fear of political persecution developed against the background of frequent meetings with the activists of the US Communist Party. Since the age of 7, Irwin went to them with his mother. Later, his memories were embodied in the poem "America" (1956).
Once Naomi tried to commit suicide, and she was placed in a mental hospital. The "imprisonment" of his wife became a reason for divorce. In 1950, Louis found a new love in the person of the bookseller Edith Cohen, with whom he lived for 26 years, until his death.

Ginsberg's experience with an unstable mother was a source of inspiration for his two major works: Howl (1956) and Kaddish (1961).
In 1943, Ginsberg graduated from East Side High School and attended Columbia University Law School. In his first year, Allen met with graduate student, future writer Lucien Carr, who introduced him to Kerouac and Burroughs. The young people became close because each of them worried about the future of American youth.

It is likely that Allen Ginsberg inherited an unstable psyche from his mother, which led to a strange, but key episode in the poet's biography. One day, while reading aloud the poetry of William Blake in his own apartment, a young man heard a voice. At first, Ginsberg claimed that God spoke to him, then that it was Blake himself. An auditory hallucination accompanied the poet for several days. Ginsberg took her as an instruction to become the voice of a new generation and began to compose the poem "Howl" - his best work.

Ginsberg's drug addiction helped to write a psychedelic, but great for a beat generation book - with the help of illegal substances, the poet tried to restore Blake's voice. In 1949, an antisocial lifestyle led to his arrest for car theft. The prison term for Ginsberg turned into compulsory treatment in a psychiatric clinic, where he met Karl Solomon, the man to whom "Howl" is dedicated.
"Howl" consists of 3 parts. In the first, Ginsberg addresses drug addicts, prostitutes, homosexuals and the mentally abnormal. These people, who were considered the scum of society, formed the beat generation in the 1950s and 1960s, aspiring to a free society. Ginsberg calls them saints, describes in detail their sexual and drug experiences, which would later become the reason for the banning of the poem.

The key image of the second part is Moloch - a deity to whom children were sacrificed. In Howl, Moloch is a Cold War society sacrificing Ginsberg's bit generation. The poet criticizes Americans for their thirst for money and violence, while preaching freedom of speech, thought and love for the beatniks.
The final part is a hymn to Karl Solomon, whose "soul is innocent and immortal, and she should not die obscenely in a psychiatric hospital with a high security." In verse, Ginsberg tells a story about a friend who suffered from clinical depression and wanted to commit suicide, but not in the usual way. Once Solomon came to a psychiatric clinic and asked to do him a lobotomy - the fate that befell Ginsberg's mother. The orderlies refused, offering in return dozens of types of therapy, ranging from electric shock treatment to confinement in a “silent” room.

For the first time, Ginsberg presented "Howl" to colleagues in 1955 at a readings at the Six Gallery in San Francisco. That day was reflected in Jack Kerouac's "Dharma Drivers". According to the fiction of the beatnik, the audience accompanied the reading of the drunk Ginsberg with cheering shouts, and released him from the stage to thunderous applause. 6 months after these events, Allen left an arrogant quote in his diary - "I am the greatest American poet", and later added "Let Jack Kerouac be the greatest."
In 1957, six months after the publication of The Howl, a batch of 520 copies was withdrawn from a printing house in London. At the same time, a man was arrested in San Francisco for selling the poem to a police officer and the director of City Lights, Lawrence Ferlinghetti. They were tried for complicity in the spread of the "obscene" poem.
The lawsuit that reinstated the greatest book of the beat generation in the ranks of literary works formed the basis of the film "Howl" (2010). The role of Allen Ginsberg was played by James Franco.
Immediately after the successful outcome of the trial, Ginsberg moved to Paris. Next to the poet was his lover Peter Orlowski, beatniks Gregory Corso, William Burroughs and others. During this productive period, Ginsberg began writing the epic poem Kaddish, Corso penned Bomb and Marriage, Burroughs combined Naked Lunch from previously written passages.

Ginsberg's main inspiration was always Jack Kerouac's concept of "spontaneous prose", which argued that literature should come from the heart, without any conscious constraints. American poetry is a fusion of modernism, romanticism, jazz tunes and Buddhism. The latter feature is especially evident in the collections "Indian Diaries" and "Chinese Painting" (1970), written under the impression of a trip to India in 1962-1963.
The last work of Ginsberg's bibliography, published during his lifetime, was the poem "The Iron Horse" (1973), which describes the behavior of people on a train.

Personal life
Allen Ginsberg realized his non-traditional sexual orientation in his youth. The first love interest was Gregory Corso, a poet and artist, one of the key representatives of the beat generation. Corso, who was in prison for 3 years for robbery, understood homosexuality, but he was "straight" himself, so the relationship between the young people did not work out. Corso and Ginsberg remained friends for many years.
In 1954, in San Francisco, Ginsberg met Peter Orlowski, a poet. On the first evening together, the men swore to each other in eternal love, which, however, did not imply fidelity - both often changed partners. Orlowski did not hesitate to spend time with the women whom Ginsberg "wooed" him. Despite "sexual freedom", the poets lived together for 43 years, until Allen's death in 1997.
Ginsberg was in love with Lucien Carr, his guide to the world of literature. Kill Your Loved Ones (2013) even showcases the kiss of the poets by Daniel Radcliffe and Dane Dehan. In life, men's relationships did not go that far: Carr was skeptical about same-sex relationships after he stabbed annoying fan David Kammerer in 1944.
There were women in Ginsberg's personal life. Even before meeting Orlowski, he met with Elise Cohen, the beatnitsa poet. Thanks to her, Ginsberg met the writer Karl Solomon.

In 1960, Ginsberg was treated for a tropical illness. It is assumed that the doctor used an unsterilized needle and the poet contracted hepatitis. His immunity was weakened forever. Smoking and drug addiction aggravated the state of health. Allen tried many times to quit addiction, but stress forced him to take up cigarettes and illegal substances again.
In the 1970s, Ginsberg suffered two minor strokes that led to Bell's palsy - later photos show that the muscles on one side of the man's face "sagged", atrophied.
In 1997, Allen Ginsberg returned for the next and last time from the hospital, where he was unsuccessfully treated for heart failure. For days on end, the poet called his friends, saying goodbye. Some telephone conversations, including those with actor Johnny Depp, were sad and interrupted by tears, with other comrades Ginsberg joked in old age.
Ginsberg died on April 5, 1997, surrounded by family and friends. Cause of death - liver cancer, which opened from hepatitis. The body was cremated, and the remains were divided into equal parts. A third of the ashes were buried in the family plot in Newark, between the graves of his father and his own mother. The second part of the ash had to lie on the ground next to Peter Orlowski after his death, which happened in 2010. The remaining third is buried in India.
