Biography

Irina Starykh does not like to give interviews, and on this occasion the sharp-tongued “voice of the Russian biathlon” - TV commentator Dmitry Guberniev - even remarked that it is necessary “to be open in terms of responsiveness to those people who pay taxes in order for the national team to get to the World Cup ".

But the biathlete is limited to only a couple of phrases, evaluating her own performances, well-being or the state of the track. Even without getting to two Olympics, including the home one, Starykh said that she was not going to prove anything to anyone, but would just return to the track. And then let the fans judge.

fact

Childhood and youth

Irina Aleksandrovna Starykh (nee Maksimova) was born on August 26, 1987 in the Urals, in the provincial city of Kurgan. The biography is silent about the girl's parents.

The girl studied at the secondary school №23 of Kurgan together with another famous biathlete Yana Romanova. In 1998, Irina became interested in biathlon. It was during training that Maksimova met Romanova - the girls studied with one coach. VS Kondakov and AM Kachalkov instilled in Irina a love for sports and a passion for victory.

After graduating from school, the girl succumbed to the persuasion of her parents that even an athlete should have a higher education, and entered the law institute of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia in Tyumen. But with the beginning of her student life, Irina did not give up biathlon. The girl continued training in Tyumen. L. A. Guryev and E. A. Pylev helped her to achieve sports heights.

Biathlon

Leonid Alexandrovich Guryev seriously approached his new ward, preparing her for competitions in the winter of 2012-2013. Irina won her first victory in 2013 in Bulgaria. In the south-west of the country, in the city of Bansko, the European Championship was held, where Starykh won a prize in the short-distance sprint race. After a well-deserved victory, the aspiring athlete was summoned to the national team of the Russian Federation. As part of the team, Irina took part in the World Cup race in the Norwegian capital Oslo (Holmenkollen district).

By the beginning of the 2013/2014 season, Irina Starykh was already preparing herself as a full-fledged member of the Russian national team. In a small picturesque village in the mountains of Austria, Hochfilzen, the girl showed excellent results, for which she received the first personal medal as part of the national team. Despite the fact that Irina won 3rd place, this bronze medal became the most important in the life of an athlete.

At the next stage, held in a town in the east of France, Annecy, the girl showed herself even better, having received a silver medal in the race. It would seem that the career is rapidly going up, sports achievements are growing from season to season, but in January 2014 an unpleasant incident occurred that left a negative imprint on the entire international sports career of the Old Ones.

The girl was disqualified for a period of 3 years, in connection with which she was expelled from the national team. The reason for such a strict decision of the International Biathlon Union was the use of prohibited chemicals by the athlete. Irina passed the first doping control successfully, but then the regulatory authorities decided to re-analyze the samples that seemed suspicious to them. Among them was the test of the Old Ones. Traces of a prohibited drug of recombinant erythropoietin were found in the girl's blood.

This substance stimulates the formation of red blood cells in the blood, which in turn increases the resistance of tissues to oxygen starvation. The main result of the use of erythropoietin injections is to increase the body's endurance.

According to the decision of the International Biathlon Union, the period of disqualification of Irina Starykh was 3 years - the girl was allowed to compete only after December 23, 2016. The Biathlon Union of Russia, represented by President Alexander Kravtsov, supported the decision of the International Union. The biathlete herself did not comment on the situation.

Even before the expiration of the official period of disqualification, Irina Starykh received the prestigious title of Honored Master of Sports of Russia. The Starykh spent the period of forced sports break with benefit - during this time the girl gave birth to her second son, recovered from childbirth and began training with a firm intention to return to big sport.

In February 2017, Irina took part in the first stage of the Biathlon World Championship, which was held in Hochfilzen, where she showed a good result, finishing in 4th place. At the championship of the Continent of the Old Ones, she was more than rehabilitated. In the individual race, the girl did not miss a single target, showed a confident move on the track and won gold.

Another medal of the highest standard adorned Irina's chest after the pursuit race, and the 7.5 km sprint ended for the biathlete on the third step of the podium. In the mixed relay, Starykh ran at the first stage, providing Svetlana Sleptsova, Alexei Volkov and Alexander Loginova with the backlog to receive a gold award.

Shortly before the start of preparations for the 2017 Olympics, Irina underwent a planned surgical intervention to remove the tonsils, since they served as a latent source of infection in the athlete's body, which prevented her from working fully.

On November 14, 2017, Starykh went to Norway (the city of Beitoshtolen), where, as part of the Russian national team, she began preparations for the Olympic Games. However, the news that on December 6, 2017, the International Olympic Committee announced that Irina Starykh, who had already served a term of disqualification for doping, would not be able to take part in the 2018 Olympics, seriously upset the Russian woman. The sports arbitration of Switzerland, where the athlete applied together with Alexander Loginov, Pavel Kulizhnikov and Denis Yuskov in order to challenge the suspension, upheld the IOC's decision.

fact

Personal life

Irina does not like to talk about her personal life, so she limits herself to dry facts. The girl is married to her biathlon colleague Alexander Starykh.

Irina's husband is slightly inferior to her in the number of sports awards, but this does not in the least prevent them from being a happy family. In marriage, they have two children: Zakhara (born in 2012) and Maxim (born in 2015).

Irina is not present on social networks, but photos of the athlete are periodically published on the page of the Russian Biathlon Union on Instagram and in the profiles of sports publications. The Internet is a place where it is not clear what time is spent on, says Starykh.

Irina is a fan of Russian pop music and comedy. Previously, I liked action films and horror films, but after the birth of my first child, tastes changed: "Blood and dirt are not mine." Among her colleagues in winter sports, Starykh singles out Magdalena Neuner, at one time she even dreamed of competing with the German legend. And Ira prefers to watch the men's biathlon, where Martin Fourcade or Tarjei Boe perform.

The family loves to relax in places to which you do not need to fly for a long time, where there are comfortable hotels and, most importantly, peace for children.

fact

Irina Starykh now

The feeling of unfulfillment, “underdevelopment”, by her own admission, does not allow Irina Starykh to cover her skis, although the 2018/2019 season began difficult for the biathlete. The athlete was not taken to any team for centralized training, and she made her way to the national team according to the sports principle, winning the qualifying starts in Finland. Before that, as part of the team of the Tyumen Region, she successfully performed in the Russian Summer Biathlon Championship.

In mid-December 2018, Starykh became the best Russian biathlete in the overall World Cup, while occupying only 8th place in the standings. In the individual race, a single shooting miss threw Ira from a possible place on the podium to an offensive 12th.

Later, the athlete will say that the reason for the miss was that she mentally "ran off the distance" ahead of time, instead of focusing on hitting targets. On the other hand, Irina was glad that she had enough strength for the entire distance, which means that she laid it out correctly.

In the mixed relay, the company of the Olds was again joined by Alexander Loginov, as well as Dmitry Malyshko and Ekaterina Yurlova-Perkht. The Russian team did not reach the medals, stopping at the 4th position. The favorite pursuit race left the shooting skier with mixed feelings. The first kilometers Irina simply endured - the highlands affected, then “caught on the girls who walked in front” and kept the position. Even the collision with other athletes at the shooting range, which led to the fall, did not knock the Old Ones off balance - she was once again convinced that she was now psychologically stable.
