Irina Rodnina

Irina Rodnina is a Soviet figure skater who is worshiped all over the world for her achievements in sports. The ten-time world champion, three-time Olympic champion and eleven-time European champion in pair skating went down in history as an athlete who did not lose a single tournament, for which she was included in the Guinness Book of Records. Irina was born on September 12, 1949 in Moscow in the family of a career military man and a doctor. The girl's father was from the Vologda region, her mother, Jewish by nationality, from Kharkov. As a child, the athlete was a weak girl in health. After 11 times had been ill with pneumonia, the parents decided that their daughter needed to be rescued, and decided to take her to the rink in order to naturally strengthen the child's immunity with the help of physical exercises.

This decision of the parents became fateful for the girl. After Rodnina first went to the rink, which happened in 1954, her biography is inextricably linked with sports. First, she was sent to the figure skating school, then to the CSKA skaters section, then the girl graduated from the CSKA sports school, and in 1974 she became a graduate of the State Central Institute of Physical Education.

The sports career of miniature Irina Rodnina (her height was 152 cm, weight - 57 kg) started in 1963, when she took 3rd prize at the All-Union youth competitions. Then her coaches were the Czechs Milan and Sonya Valun, and her partner was Oleg Vlasov. After the first victory, the future Olympic champion became Stanislav Zhuk's pupil. Together with the new coach, Rodnina's figure skating partner also changed, Alexey Ulanov became him.

Over the next 10 years, Irina Rodnina and Alexei Ulanov won gold medals at the European Championships and the Olympics, becoming leaders in the international sports arena with each victory.

In 1972, Irina Rodnina's injury separates her from her figure skating partner. After a 3-month break in sports, Alexander Zaitsev becomes the athlete's partner. Together they became legends of figure skating and achieved brilliant results on the rink, which no modern figure skater could achieve.

In the mid-70s, the duo came under the leadership of a young coach Tatiana Tarasova, who focused on the artistic component of each number. New ideas allowed the couple to fully reveal their potential and take two more Olympic golds - in Innsbruck in 1976 and Lake Placid in 1980.

In 1981, the figure skater moved to professional sports and became an honored figure skating coach. From 1990 to 2002 she lived in the United States and was a coach. Her best coaching result in the international arena is considered to be the victory at the World Championship by a pair of Radka Kovarzhikova and Rene Novotny from the Czech Republic.

Beginning in 2003, Irina Rodnina tried to break into the Russian political arena, but twice failed in the elections to the State Duma. In 2007, she still managed to become a deputy from the United Russia party from the Omsk region and take the post of deputy chairman of the education committee in parliament.

In 2011, she was re-elected as a State Duma deputy and became a member of the committee on women, family and children. At the same time, in the "United Russia" figure skater heads several intra-party projects dedicated to the development of Russian sports.

Rodnina joined the Council for Physical Culture and Sports under the President of the Russian Federation. She became a participant in the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in Sochi. Former figure skater and renowned ice hockey coach Vladislav Tretyak lit the Olympic flame.

The first husband of the world figure skating champion was her skating partner Alexander Zaitsev. In 1979, they had a son, Alexander, who later became a ceramic artist. He lives in Russia, is married and has a daughter, Sonya. The marriage of Rodnina and Zaitsev was filled with family problems due to the fact that the husband could not come to terms with his wife's success.

Soon, the athlete again opened her heart towards female happiness, having fallen in love with businessman Leonid Minkovsky, who has nothing to do with sports. In 1986, the couple had a daughter, Alena.

In 1990, the Olympic champion, at the invitation of the American International Figure Skating Center, moved to America with her family, but a year later she was left alone again - Minkovsky went to another woman.

Rodnina recalls this period as one of the most difficult in her life. She had to sue her husband for a long time to prove her right to raise her daughter. Rodnina managed to stay with Alena, but the girl was forbidden to leave the United States. There she graduated and stayed to live. Now Minkovskaya is the host of the American news Internet resource HuffPostLife.

Irina Konstantinovna continues to contribute to the development of children's sports in Russia. In May, she took part in the 17th International Sports Film Festival KRASNOGORSKI, in July she visited Khanty-Mansiysk, where the 5th World Games of Young Compatriots took place.

Rodnina continues to support the Yard Trainer project, in which sports organizations from 60 regions of Russia took part in 2019. And in September, the deputy noted at the opening of the X Youth Games of the Asia-Pacific Region, which took place in Vladivostok.
