I have the same case. In 2014, I finally split up with my ex, and I'm not even interested in what's going on with her, my current girlfriend is great at me, and... Every once in a while, I dream about it, and there's something nice going on, and something nice is happening. While we were together, I never dreamed of her.
Maybe it's because we've parted up, not in the best way, the subconscious spins some games for a re-inion or keeps a bit of nostalgia for the "good old days."

Maybe you're dreaming about your ex-boyfriend because you subconsciously thought of it even once a day. At least i do, I dream of things that I've either thought or commented on. As for your friend's exit, you have to tell him you're not comfortable when you're staying alone for more time.
