In 1989, the football club "Chernomorets", watching the impressive game of the pupil, invited the young man to the team. Tsymbalar, as a midfielder, made his first appearance in the Higher League at the USSR Championship. Together with a talented footballer, the team managed to win the USSR Football Federation Cup, the club's only award during the Soviet period. In 1992, the athlete scored the only goal in the Ukrainian Cup final, which allowed Chornomorets to become the owner of the trophy.

In 1993, Ilya's biography was replenished with new events. Together with his friend Yuri Nikiforov, the young man received an invitation from Spartak Moscow. The transition to the Russian team was successful for the midfielder. In the games for the "red-white" athlete showed impressive results. The team became the six-time Russian champion and managed to win the Russian Cup twice.

The talent of the young footballer was noted by the team's coach Oleg Romantsev. In 1995, according to the versions of several publications, Tsymbalar was named the best football player in Russia. The player had a refined technique, calculated the tactics of the match, and could assess the force majeure situation that arose on the field outside the box. In 1996, Spartak, with the help of Ilya, won the matches with Alania and Real Madrid. From 1997 to 1998, the midfielder served as team captain.

It seemed that everything in a man's sports career was going well. The midfielder even received business offers from Real Madrid and Arsenal, but Ilya chose to stay in Russia. Photos of the brilliant goals of the midfielder were adorned with Russian magazines.

The athlete joined Lokomotiv and even scored a goal against CSKA in the opponent's goal, but due to frequent injuries he had to terminate the contract. In 2001, Ilya became a midfielder at Anji, but relations with the club did not work out again. In 2002, the footballer retired. In addition to team games, the man participated in the matches of the national teams of Ukraine and Russia.

Having finished his career as a football player, the player took up coaching. For several years Tsymbalar worked with different teams. In 2011, the athlete's coaching career ended. Until 2013, the midfielder periodically played for Spartak veterans.

The footballer's wife Irina gave her wife two sons - Sergei, who was born in 1988, and Oleg, who appeared in 1990.

The boys followed in their father's footsteps, playing in football clubs in Ukraine and Russia. The marriage continued until the player's death in 2013.

Tsymbalar passed away on December 28, 2013. The experts named heart disease as the presumable cause of death.

The funeral took place in the player's homeland, in Odessa, at the Tairovsky cemetery. In 2016, a monument was solemnly erected on the athlete's grave.
