In sports, as in any other field of activity, serious results are achieved by those who fully devote themselves to work. Exhausting hours of training for a moment of victory, years of practice for participating in international competitions, blood and sweat for a medal or title. 

It is difficult to start a family in such a frantic rhythm, but even those who succeed, simply cannot find time to maintain home comfort. Sports seriously limit privacy. However, do not forget that athletes are the winners of the impossible. So who, if not them, can break the stereotypes? Ilya Kulik is a vivid example of this.

The future ice conqueror was born on May 23, 1977. It happened in Moscow. At the age of five, Ilya saw the skaters perform on TV and said that he wanted to be like them. Realizing that the boy was not joking, Ilya's mother took her son to the local figure skating section. The coach S. Gromov noted the boy's artistry and amazing plasticity.

Therefore, having taught Ilya the basics, he handed him over to a more experienced specialist, Viktor Nikolaevich Kudryavtsev, a member of the Presidium of the Figure Skating Federation. Under the leadership of Kudryavtsev in 1990, Ilya won his first award. It happened at the Piruetten Juniors competition held in Norway. At that time, Kulik was 13 years old. Then he realized that he really wanted to devote himself to figure skating.

Two years later, at the World Junior Figure Skating Championships, held in Seoul, Ilya won a bronze medal. In 1994, Ilya won the Russian junior championship, and at the beginning of the next he again took part in the world championship, but this time instead of bronze he won gold. This success made the coaches think about including the young skater in the national team.

The decision was made, and already in 1995 Kulik made his debut at the European Figure Skating Championships, having won the title of champion. In the same year, a new coach comes to replace Viktor Kudryavtsev - Tatyana Anatolyevna Tarasova. She sees an untapped potential in Ilya, so she offers Kulik a complicated program full of complex artistic elements. It is not possible to master this program the first time, therefore in 1996 Ilya loses at the European Championship.

Having regained faith in himself with victories at the 1997 and 1998 Russian championships, as well as winning the final of the Grand Prix in figure skating in 1997, Kulik went to the 1998 Winter Olympics, held in the city of Nagano, Japan. And he returns from there a winner. In addition to the Olympic medal, Kulik also received the title of Chevalier of the Order of Honor for achievements in sports.

In 1999 he decided to move from amateur to professional sports. He began to participate in the Skate America and Skate Canada tournaments, as well as in the Trophee Eric Bompard (France), NHK Trophy (Japan), Finlandia Trophy (Finland) and Nebelhorn Trophy (FRG) competitions.

In 2000, he starred in the American feature film "Proscene", playing the role of a Russian guy Sergei. Later he took part in the "Stars on Ice" and "Champions on Ice" shows, and also took up coaching activities, later receiving the title of Honored Coach of Russia.

While participating in the show, Kulik met Ekaterina Alexandrovna Gordeeva, a Russian figure skater who became a widow in 1995. It is worth clarifying that Ilya and Katya had already crossed paths earlier in training - Kulik was then 9 years old, and Gordeeva - 14. The skaters liked each other purely from a professional point of view, and soon began to take part in group performances together.

In between the next performances, Kulik decided to unwind and have a good rest with his comrades and colleagues Denis Petrov and Georgy Sur. The choice fell on a parachute jump. The idea to invite Gordeeva came unexpectedly, but her agreement to join the company was even more unexpected. As a result, Ilya and Ekaterina made a double jump.

Several months later, Ilya and Ekaterina got married. It happened on June 10, 2001 in San Francisco, and on June 15, 2002, the couple had a daughter, Elizabeth, in Los Angeles. For Gordeeva, this was already the second child - on September 11, 1992, she gave birth to a daughter, Daria, from her first husband, Sergei Grinkov. Katya was very afraid that Ilya and Daria would not get along, but it turned out quite the opposite - they became friends, and Kulik became the girl's personal figure skating coach.

In 2007, their family moved to Newport Beach, California, where they still live. They do not plan to return to Russia for permanent residence, since they are satisfied with work in America, while there are no prospects for their development at home. Nevertheless, none of the family of Ilya and Catherine forgets their roots - at home they speak exclusively Russian, cultivate national traditions, and also regularly visit the Motherland.

For the past seven years, Ilya has spent little time on the ice - an hour a day, three to four days a week, to keep fit. There are exceptions, though. For example, in 2016, together with his wife, he began work on the Romeo and Juliet ice show. In 2017, this show was presented to the general public.

Also in 2017, Ilya and Ekaterina appeared at the anniversary of their coach Tatyana Tarasova - performed with a number, and later held an autograph session.
