Biography

In 1975, Ian McEwan burst into English literature with a collection of strange, macabre, and unlikely stories. Since then, he has never ceased to amaze, terrify, and delight the reading public. The writer plays with his readers in subtle postmodern games, slips them with unreliable storytellers, scatters handfuls of references through the pages and remakes classic plots in a new way.

Childhood and youth

Ian McEwan was born June 21, 1948 in Aldershot, Hampshire. His father David McEwan, a Scottish by birth, served as a career officer in the British army, so the writer's childhood passed where military bases were located - in Germany, East Asia and North Africa.

Rose's mother Lillian Violet was previously married. During World War II, while her husband was at the front, she met David McEwan. A relationship began between them, soon the woman became pregnant and gave birth to a son. But in order to hide the betrayal from her husband, she had to give the baby up for adoption.

Rosa's spouse did not find out about the betrayal or the birth of a boy - he died in the war. Upon receiving the news of his death, the woman married David. The future Booker Prize laureate was born in legal marriage and for half a century did not even suspect of his brother's existence. They met in 2007, when Dave Sharp (the same firstborn who was given to a foster family) decided to find his real relatives.

In 1959, Ian's family returned from North Africa to England. Until 1966, the future writer studied at the Wolverstone Boarding School, located in Suffolk. Children from different social groups studied here, and, finding himself in this colorful environment, the boy quickly realized that his English was far from ideal. In an effort to overcome his illiteracy, McEwan eagerly took up study and reading, asked friends to correct his speech and writing errors.

Efforts were not in vain, Ian learned to speak and write correctly, but the attentive attitude to the word remained the same. Having entered the University of Sussex, the young man first tried himself as a writer. During his studies, he wrote mostly scripts and sketches. McEwan graduated cum laude in 1970 with a BA in English Literature.

The next step in his biography was admission to the University of East Anglia. Here he became acquainted with the work of a number of young American authors who had a great influence on him: Norman Mailer, John Updike, Henry Mellow. Iain began writing prose, experimenting, he liked to go beyond the established literary tradition. In 1971, after completing a course in creative writing, he received his master's degree.

Literature

McEwan's literary debut took place in 1975. In the collection “First Love, Last Anointing,” he collected stories written for a course project under one cover. The author christened his first book “the laboratory,” where, in search of his “I” as a writer, he experimented with genres of storytelling, creating heroes unusual for 20th century literature. The spirit of rebelliousness inherent in Ian's prose was liked by critics - the collection was awarded the Somerset Maugham Prize.

In 1978, two new books were published at once: the collection Between the Downed Sheets, in which reality is closely intertwined with mysticism, and the novel The Cement Garden. The latter caused a wave of controversy in the literary community: firstly, McEwan touched on many difficult topics (for example, incest), and secondly, in the plot of the novel, readers saw a similarity with the work of Julian Gloag's “House of Our Mother” (1963). Nevertheless, the scandalous novel became a cult and was included in the collection "Horror: Another 100 Best Books".

During the 1980s, McEwan focused on writing screenplays for film and television. In 1981, the novel Consolation of Wanderers was published, which brought the writer his first nomination for the Booker Prize, which did not end in victory. Then, in 1987, the Child in Time was born. In these novels, the author is still interested in "on the edge" topics. He puts his heroes in force majeure situations, leads them through trials, after which their life will no longer be the same.

Innocent or Special Relationship, published in 1990, combines a detective, spy, historical and psychological novel. It was followed by Black Dogs (1992), Unbearable Love (1997) and Amsterdam (1998). The latest novel earned Ian McEwan the highly anticipated Booker Prize. True, not all critics shared the opinion of experts, calling this work far from the best in the writer's creative biography.

McEwan entered the new century with a new novel, Atonement (2001). He did not bring the writer a new "Booker", but he received other, less authoritative awards. In Atonement, the author, as in his other books, mystifies the reader, makes him believe in the truth of the events described, and then turns everything upside down. The finale of the novel gave rise to numerous discussions, and the references to the classics of English literature, generously scattered across the pages of the book, delighted sophisticated readers.

In the 2000s, Ian McEwan published two more works - "Saturday" (2005) and "On the Shore" (2007). In 2010, the novel Solnechnaya was published, which won the Woodhouse Prize. In “Sweetheart” (2012), the writer turns to personal experience - England of the 70s with all its social upheavals became the chronotope of the work. McEwan dedicated this novel to the memory of his friend, American journalist Christopher Hitchens.

The title of his next book, The Children Act (2014), takes the reader back to the 1989 Act of Parliament. Critics have compared the work to Dickens's Bleak House. In 2016, McEwan's 14th novel In the Shell was released, in which the events of Shakespeare's Hamlet were rethought in a modern way. The storyteller is the unborn child of the main characters.

In addition, Ian McEwan wrote two children's books, Rose Blanche (1985) and The Dreamer (1994), a number of plays and scripts, and the oratorio Or Should We Die? (1983) and libretto of the opera “For You” (2008). 11 films were made based on the writer's works. The 12th in a row, based on the novel "Sweetheart", is in production.

Personal life

In the 70s, while studying at the University of East Anglia, McEwan met Penny Allen. At that time, behind the shoulders of his chosen one there was already one marriage, from which she had two daughters. In 1982 they got married.

In 1995, the couple divorced. Allen explained her decision to part with the hardships of life with a famous person. Ian received the right of sole custody of two sons, but in 1999 the ex-wife kidnapped the youngest boy and left with him and her new partner in France. A British court ordered her to return the child to her father, but, according to rumors, the woman never came to terms with this state of affairs.

In 2014, Penny appeared at the Book Festival, where McEwan presented a new novel, Children's Law, to readers. She turned to her ex-husband with questions regarding custody of her sons. After that, the organizers of the event took her out of the hall.

Now the writer is happy in his second marriage. His second wife was Annalena McAfee, a British writer and journalist. They met during an interview - Annalena met with the Booker Prize laureate on the instructions of the Financial Times. The couple legalized the relationship in 1997.
