Biography
A frequent visitor to Chinese action movies packed with melee kung fu special effects, Sammo Hung is a favorite of many adventure movie fans. Films with his participation are full of action-packed collisions, spectacular combat scenes and a good dose of sparkling humor. But this is only one hypostasis of a famous person - acting. Hung has directed dozens of films, the most famous of which are Project A (1983), Snack on Wheels (1984), Mister Cool (1997), and others.
fact
Childhood and youth
Sammo Hung (real name Hung Kam Bo) was born on January 7, 1952 in Hong Kong. The boy's family knew about cinema firsthand. Hung Chun Ho's grandfather is a director and screenwriter. Chin Ang-Ji's grandmother, China's first female movie star, starred in dozens of films, debuting in 1925.
The parents of the future star worked as costume designers at one of the local film studios. Over-employment of adults led to the fact that the child was often left to himself. The boy skipped classes at school, got involved in street fights and, quite likely, would have become a complete bully, if not for the wise decision of his grandparents - to send his grandson to study at the Hong Kong branch of the famous Beijing Opera School.
So in 1961, a new page began in the biography of Sammo Hung. At school, a 9-year-old boy came under the supervision of master Yu Jim Yuan, known for his tough methods of education. He saw abilities in the boy and included in a special group, which he called "The Seven Lucky". Did he know then that he would raise a galaxy of future movie stars? Chen Long, the future world famous Jackie Chan, Yuen Biao, Corey Yuen and others, were also among those chosen by the master.
Initiated students traditionally took a new name that included the teacher's surname. So, Sammo began to be called Yuen Lung, Jackie Chan - Yuen Lo. The boys became friends immediately, and Jackie respectfully referred to the older Hung as Big Brother.
The "lucky ones", meanwhile, did not feel like that at all. The conditions at the school were harsh. The boys got up in the dark, worked in the sweat of their brow: they mastered gymnastics, acrobatics, acting, and in the evening, the students had to do housework. For disobedience, the children were punished with beatings.
The first acquaintance with the world of cinema took place when Sammo was still a child. The boy made his acting debut in the 1961 film Education Of Love.
When the boy was 14 years old, Yuen's teacher, who had strong connections in the world of the Hong Kong film industry, began to attract him to help on the set, to perform stunts in films. The experience of working in the cinema interested the teenager. He enjoyed working in front of the cameras, and he divided the money he earned between his younger brothers in school.
However, the young man learned the other side of the pleasure pretty soon: at the age of 16 he received a serious injury to his leg, which confined him to bed for a long time. After studying at school for 7 years, Sammo Hung comes out of its walls, determined to conquer Chinese cinema.

Films
Between 1966 and 1974, the guy worked on over 30 films. I took on any job - I was a stuntman, understudy, stunt coordinator, assistant director. Things took off after 1970, when Hung - by that time he had already adopted the pseudonym Sammo (the name of a funny animation hero) - began collaborating with Hong Kong producer Raymond Chow and Golden Harvest film company as a stage director of action scenes.
In 1973, Sammo again returned to acting experience, starred in the film "Coming Out of the Dragon." Hung played a Shaolin monk and entered an on-screen duel with Bruce Lee. In 1975 he starred in the film "The Man from Hong Kong", in 1976 - in the action movie "The Hand of Death".
By this time, Hong Kong cinema had already begun to move away from the genre of epic martial arts films. And Hung suggested the directors an idea - why not shoot comedy films with the presence of spectacular fighting scenes. As proof, in 1977 he released the film "The Monk with an Iron Fist", which, in fact, marked the beginning of a new genre and a series of films, each of which brings success to Hung - as an actor and as a director.
By 1978, Hung was also becoming a businessman. Opens three of his own production companies and becomes an influential person in the Hong Kong film industry. Being able to help the younger brothers in the Peking Opera School, he finds Jackie Chan and Yuen Biao, offering to work in joint projects.
In 1983, the film "Project A" was released, in which the main roles were played by "Three Dragons" - the so-called star union of Chan, Hung and Biao. This creative alliance will last until 1988, when the three last co-starred in Dragons Forever.
Until 1990 Hung worked a lot and fruitfully, replenishing the filmography. In 1986, the movie "Millionaire Express" was released, where the actor was filmed with the then popular athlete and actress Cynthia Rothrock.
In 1988, Hung appeared in the film Painted Faces, which became a biographical film for him. The picture tells about the difficult everyday life of the students of the world-famous institution, describes the stories of three friends - Hung himself, Jackie Chan and Yuen Biao. In 1991, Sammo Hung broke off a long-standing relationship with Raymond Chow Film Company due to commercial differences.
In 1998, the actor moved to the USA, where he starred in the TV series "Chinese Policeman". The TV project unexpectedly gained recognition, making Hung the only Asian actor who managed to conquer American prime time.
In the 2000s, Hung was once again at the pinnacle of success in Hong Kong cinema. In 2005, he starred in The Legend of the Dragon, and in 2008, in Wushu, directed by Anthony Seto and produced by Jackie Chan. The film, which premiered in Beijing, was presented at the 2008 Cannes Film Festival.
In 2010, the master received a lifetime achievement award at the New York Asian Film Festival. In 2014, Mr. Hung played the role of Master Ti in Once Upon a Time in Shanghai. And then he completed work on a large historical project "God of War" (2017).
fact
Personal life
The actor's first wife was Jo Yoon Ok, whom he knew from martial arts school. In marriage, four children were born - three sons and a daughter.
Hung divorced his wife in 1994 and in 1995 remarried actress and model Joyce Godenzi.
fact
Sammo Hung now
In 2009, the actor underwent heart surgery. The cause of the disease was overweight - almost 100 kg with a height of 170 cm, as well as a busy work schedule. Now Mr. Hung has lost weight, tempered his love of cigars. The actor is still working, but he has optimized his schedule to keep him well.
He devotes his free time to socializing with friends and family, loves fishing and playing golf. On Instagram there is an unverified account of the actor, where you can see his rare photos.
In June 2018, on the actor's fan club page on VKontakte, information appeared with a link to the Martial Arts Action Cinema website that the legendary Sammo Hung was returning as an actor and director with the sequel to the classic 1985 film My Lucky Stars.
