Biography
Son of a surgeon, Humphrey Bogart began studying medicine and finally enlisted in the navy during the First World War. It will bring back a wound to the lip. Demobilized, he turned to the theater, starting as a stage manager in 1918. His meeting with producer William A. Brady led him to appear for the first time on screen in Life (1920) by Travers Vale. After performing for fifteen years on the stage, he won his first film success in 1935 with The Petrified Forest, the adaptation of a play he played in the theater with Leslie Howard.
Hired by Warner Bros. studios, he specializes in the secondary roles of gangsters, filming under the direction of Michael Curtiz for The Last Round (1937) and Les Anges aux figures dirty (1938) and William Wyler for Rue sans issue (1937). In 1941, his career took a new turn with Raoul Walsh's The Great Escape. The aging thug Roy Earle, a role for which George Raft was initially intended, is the first of his characters to benefit from a human thickness. The same year, he lent his features to the private Sam Spade in John Huston's The Maltese Falcon, then five years later to Raymond Chandler's Philip Marlowe in The Big Sleep (1946), thus becoming the archetype of the film noir detective.
His following feature films take as a frame the Second World War and put forward his adventurous side: "Bogey" must obstruct the plans of a dangerous spy linked to the Japanese in Yellow Claws (1942), he is an American in exile in Casablanca in Michael Curtiz's film which allows him to reach the status of international star , he directs the crew of a tank in Sahara (1943) and plays a sea bass, engaged against his will in the Resistance in Martinique, in The Port of Anguish (1945). It was on the set of this last feature film that he met Lauren Bacall, a young actress who
From 1949, Humphrey Bogart alternates thrillerslegal and adventure stories. In the first category, he plays a lawyer defending a delinquent in Les Ruelles du malheur (1949), a screenwriter accused of the murder of a waitress in Le Violent (1950) as well as a judge protecting a witness in La Woman to be slaughtered (1951). Entering the second register, African Queen won him the Oscar for Best Actor in 1952, while Edward Dmytryk imagined him as a neurotic and suicidal officer for Ouragan on the Caine (1954). Bogey also tries his hand at comedy playing Billy Wilder's Sabrina, but the two have a conflicting relationship during filming. It was the commercial failure of Joseph L. Mankiewicz's drama, La Comtesse aux pieds nus, which pushed him to the end of his career.
