Harlan Coben is an American author of detective and mystical thrillers. The writer is the first recipient of three prestigious literary awards: the Shamus, Poe and Anthony Bush awards.

In Livingston High School, the guy was friends with the future governor of the state Chris Christie, and at Amherst College, where Harlan mastered the profession of a political scientist, with the future novelist Dan Brown.

After college, Coben worked for a travel company owned by his grandfather, and accompanied groups of excursionists to Europe. The impressions of the trip became Harlan's debut in the epistolary genre.

Like the Russian director Svetlana Druzhinina and her husband, cameraman Anatoly Mukasey, Coben met his future wife on the student's sports ground. Harlan headed the men's college basketball team, and the girl he liked, Anna Armstrong, headed the women's one. The wife gave the writer five children, whose names are Charlotte, Benjamin, Alexandra, Gabrielle and Eve.

The personal and professional lives of the writer's family provide Coben with a foundation for creating a believable backdrop for the adventures of the heroes of the books. Anna Armstrong-Coben works as a pediatrician, and Harlan often writes off medical characters from his wife. Daughter Charlotte writes poetic fragments for her father's detectives, which Coben mentions, in particular, at the beginning of the novel "Just One Look."

Harlan was friends with the author of "Infinite Joke" - writer David Foster Wallace, whose biography tragically ended in 2008. Although Coben has an apartment in New York, he now lives with his wife in his home state, where the action of most of his works takes place. An important place in the life of the family is occupied by a Shih Tzu dog, photos of which often appear on the writer's Instagram.

Most of Coben's works investigate crimes - murders and disappearances of people committed in the past. Harlan's first novel, Play Dead, was published when the author was 28 years old. The character David Baskins disappears on his honeymoon around the Great Barrier Reef.
