Biography
The world learned the name of the modern Russian writer Guzel Yakhina relatively recently. By 2017, her books were published in 16 languages ββand sold in large circulation far beyond the borders of Russia. The author managed to find the secret of modern prose, combining historical truth and mythology in his works.
fact
Childhood and youth
Guzel Shamilevna Yakhina (in the original name sounds like Guzul) was born in Kazan (Republic of Tatarstan) on June 1, 1977 in the family of an engineer and a doctor. The Yakhins' intelligent family, Tatars by nationality, instilled in the girl a love of reading classical literature from childhood.
Not only parents, who are often at work, but also grandparents were involved in raising their daughter. It was the representatives of the older generation that significantly influenced Guzel's worldview, tastes and hobbies.
In an interview, the writer later recalled that the life of her mother's family was different from the way of life of her father's. And if the first in the conditions of the city managed to preserve the peasant customs, then in the second house there was a love for other values ββ- art, conversations about politics, dinner parties.
One of Yakhina's grandfathers taught German after the war, and in his free time he carved animal figurines from wood. But the writer inherited her literary talent from her second grandfather, who often told her little granddaughter her own fairy tales.

Noticing the natural abilities and desire of their daughter for the world of art, the parents sent Guzel to an art school. Having already become an adult woman and an accomplished writer, Yakhina said in an interview that she was happy to help arrange exhibitions of her grandfather's works, and in her free time she enthusiastically copied masterpieces of world art culture from the Kazan Museum of Fine Arts.
However, after receiving a secondary education, Guzel suddenly decided to follow in the footsteps of her second grandfather and entered the faculty of foreign philology of the State Pedagogical Institute in Kazan. At the same time, since childhood, Guzel dreamed of studying at the All-Russian State Institute of Cinematography named after S. A. Gerasimov, but, frightened by the competitive selection, she did not even try her hand.
Although Yakhina loves her small homeland - Kazan, in 1999 she decided to move. Having moved to Moscow, Guzel quickly got used to it and began to call the Russian capital home. Considering that the girl was forced to make a living herself, Yakhina chose the advertising business, which was rapidly developing in Russia at that time.
In addition, Guzel Yakhina decided to get closer to her childhood dream and entered the screenwriting department at the Moscow Film School, from which she graduated in 2015.
fact
Personal life
Despite the popularity of Guzel Yakhina's work, little is known about the writer's personal life. According to Internet sources, Guzel Shamilevna is married and has a daughter.
The writer emphasizes that in raising children, it is important to create for them a sense of time and their presence in it. Therefore, together with her husband, Guzel drew two timelines for the girl, on which she marked the dates associated with world history, family life and the history of Russia. There is also a family pedigree hanging over the daughter's bed, which covers the period up to the beginning of the 19th century.
In her free time, Yakhina reads books, she especially likes historical literature. It is the events of the period 1930-1950 of the twentieth century that often serve as inspiration for Guzel.
According to the woman, this period in the history of the Soviet Union is full of dramatic and tragic events that broke thousands of lives. And, despite the fact that millions of works have been written by various authors on these topics, Yakhina found a new original approach in her work.

Books
Guzel Yakhina's career began in the early 2000s, after moving to Moscow. Although working in the advertising business took a lot of time and effort, in the evenings and on weekends Guzel wrote short stories, then for herself.
The first publications of Yakhina's stories in literary periodicals soon followed. The acquaintance of readers with the work of Guzel Shamilevna began with the stories "Rifle" and "Moth".
At the same time, Guzel began to write a novel, which later brought her a number of literary awards and a lot of admirers. When the work on the book was completed, Yakhina faced a number of difficulties in finding a publication for the publication of the novel: no one wanted to get in touch with the beginning author unknown to the public.
Separate chapters of the work "Zuleikha Opens Eyes" were published in the monthly literary magazine "Siberian Lights" in order to interest readers and attract the attention of publishers.

After a series of setbacks, Yakhina changed tactics and contacted Elena Kostyukovich personally through the website of the Elkost literary agency. From that moment on, Guzel Yakhina's path to success began. In 2015, the novel "Zuleikha Opens Her Eyes" was published and sold in huge numbers, the text of the work was disassembled into quotes.
The events of the novel unfold in 1930 in a small village of the Republic of Tatarstan. The prototype of the main character Zuleikha was the writer's grandmother Raisa Shakirovna, who worked as a teacher of the Russian language at school. It was she who taught her granddaughter to read and write, and along the way told stories from her youth, which formed the basis of Yakhina's novel.
Nevertheless, the book "Zuleikha Opens Her Eyes" does not describe the real biography of Raisa Shakirovna. Most of it still represents the fiction of Guzel Shamilevna.

In addition to Raisa Shakirovna, the source of reliable information about the period of the 1930s of the twentieth century was the memoirs and memoirs of people who survived exile, imprisonment in camps, etc. But the image of Upyrikha (as Zuleikha's mother-in-law calls) is copied from the imperious and wayward great-grandmother Guzel.
After the release of the novel, Guzel Yakhina won five prestigious literary awards, including such as "Yasnaya Polyana" and "Big Book". However, literary critics from Tatarstan took the book with hostility, referring to the fact that Guzel Shamilevna preaches lack of spirituality and betrayal on the pages of the work. Nevertheless, soon the play “Zuleikha Opens Her Eyes” was already successfully staged on theatrical stages in Russia, and later a script for the film of the same name was prepared.
Guzel Shamilevna did not rest on her laurels for a long time, but reflected on the heroes and the plot of the new book. The topic of the next work, as Yakhina said in an interview, was the crisis of personality self-identification.

Simultaneously with the work on the novels, Guzel Shamilevna writes scripts for Russian television series, which, according to the author, should be replaced on the air of TV channels by standard, as if shot according to a template, multi-part films.
The author's bibliography is also supplemented by new works. In 2016, the Esquire edition published the story "Schweipolt", 2 years later, the text "Jubilee" was published in the issue of the magazine "October". Yakhina posts news from her creative life on the official website, she also has an Instagram account, where personal photos of the writer appear.
Another achievement of the author was the use of Yakhina's texts in "Total Dictation" in 2018. Three small excerpts from Guzel Shamilevna's future novel "My Children" were read by Yakhina personally in the framework of popularizing the Russian language and raising the level of literacy. In total, "Total Dictation" includes three texts entitled "Morning", "Day", "Evening", in which the author tells about the life of a village school teacher.

Screen adaptation
The rights to film the bestseller Guzel Yakhina were bought by the Russia-1 TV channel immediately after the presentation of the book. The film company "Russian" was engaged in filming. In the series, the everyday life of the 30s of the XX century was recreated with scrupulous accuracy. The residents of Kazan were especially interested in watching the development of the plot, since some of the crowd scenes were created in their hometown.
Work on the project began in 2017. The director Yegor Anashkin selected a stellar cast. The main role, as planned by the writer herself, went to Chulpan Khamatova.
In the first series, Yulia Peresild, who played a revolutionary, and Rosa Khairullina, who reincarnated as Zuleikha's mother-in-law, Upyrikha, also shone. From the second episode, Sergey Makovetsky, Alexander Bashirov, Alexander Sirin and others joined the cast.

The drama premiered on April 13, 2020. Despite the fact that the film made a favorable impression on the public on the whole, it was nevertheless criticized by experts and viewers.
It was noted that the historical drama in the hands of the director turned into a melodrama. In the opinion of the public, the filmmakers treated the novel as female prose, focusing on the lyrical line of the heroine.
Guzel Yakhina and Chulpan Khamatova spoke about their work on the project after the premiere of the series live on the Instagram social network on the Give Life Foundation page.
