Biography
Grigory Oster is a popular children's writer, screenwriter and TV presenter, on whose "Harmful Councils" several generations of readers have grown up. Once he wanted to be an "adult" poet, but over time he realized that children are a much more grateful and sincere audience, and devoted his creative career to them.
fact
Childhood and youth
Grigory Bentsionovich Oster was born in Odessa on November 27, 1947. Later, his family moved to Yalta. The love of reading to little Grisha was instilled by his mother, who worked as a librarian, and in high school he became interested in poetry and began to write poetry himself.
After school, Grigory went to the army, where he served in the Northern Fleet, and after demobilization, he entered the capital's Literary Institute at the correspondence department of the drama faculty. During his studies, the future writer worked as a night watchman in the famous Yalta Glade of Fairy Tales.
fact
Literature
Auster's debut work was a book of poems written at the age of 16. They were intended for adult readers and claimed the status of serious lyrics. The collection was published in 1974, when Grigory Bentsionovich was still serving in the army. When publishing the book, the editors severely “cut” the book and threw out a significant part of the poems, which upset the novice author.
By the end of his studies at the institute, Oster finally decided that he would not write for adults: the need to constantly weave communist propaganda into poetry and novels hated him, and besides, it was very difficult to break through this environment and make money on creativity.
The children's collection "How good to give gifts" brought wide popularity to the writer. It was in it that 4 heroes first appeared - Boa, Elephant, Parrot and Monkey, who later became characters in the cartoons "38 parrots" and "Granny boa constrictor". Soon recognition in the field of drama also came: the play "The Man with a Tail" in 1976 was successfully performed in puppet theaters.
After 2 years, Oster wrote the famous "Kitten named Woof". The fairy tale formed the basis for the animated film that Soviet children loved.
The Harmful Advice series began as separate small poems for publication in magazines. The first advice "Brave Chef" was published in "Kolobok" in 1983. Little readers liked the idea of giving advice “on the contrary”, but the parents did not immediately appreciate it - it took time for the jokes to “reach” the adult audience. Later, "Harmful Advice" became a separate literary genre - Oster had many followers and imitators.
Grigory Bentsionovich considers his best work "A Tale with Details", written in the spirit of a hypertextual novel, but, as he once lamented in an interview, the publishers "were in no hurry to tear it out of their hands."
An important part of Oster's creative biography is his work in film and animation. Since the 1980s, he has been working as a screenwriter for children's films and fairy tales. The first works in this area were "Boy and Girl" and "How the Gosling Lost". In animation, the writer worked with renowned directors - Vyacheslav Kotenochkin, Lev Atamanov, Maya Miroshkina, Vladimir Pekar.
The plots of his stories formed the basis of full-fledged performances, for example, the School of the Modern Play created a production based on the Harmful Advice. Oster also wrote scripts for the Yeralash newsreel.
In 1996, the author received the first award - the prize of the readers' sympathy competition "Golden Key". In 2002, he received the State Prize of Russia in the field of literature and art and the prestigious literary prize named after Korney Chukovsky, and in 2007 Grigory Oster became an Honored Artist of the Russian Federation.
Since 2004, the writer has been a member of the team of developers of a special state website for children. The resource titled "The President of Russia - to the citizens of school age" tells in an accessible form about the work of the authorities in the country. According to the writer, he does this work voluntarily and for free, and everything that he wrote for the resource was personally approved by Vladimir Putin and Dmitry Medvedev.
In 2008-2009, Oster hosted the TV show "Children's Pranks" together with the singer Glucose. It was a game project, the main prize of which, despite the young audience, was the sum of money.
Grigory Bentsionovich is the author of a series of playful textbooks on physics and mathematics, which he himself calls "beloved manuals." The purpose of these works is to develop not so much the ability to count and solve problems as a sense of humor and fantasy. Oster invented new sciences for children, for example, "Candy Eating", "Vritteratura", "Nothing Science", and published problem books on them.
The writer makes the heroes masterfully portray and parody the behavior of young children, is able to faithfully reproduce the atmosphere of the school and the home environment (“School of Horrors”, “Children and These”). Auster's books are full of riddles, verbal finds, and interesting facts. They not only entertain, but also teach to compose, help the development of speech.
The rich language of the writer, the abundance of invented words and funny characters in textbooks teach children the subtleties of the Russian language. At the same time, his tales and poems touch upon topics that are important for young readers: culture of behavior, psychology, safety. They explain to the little reader in an accessible form what is happening around him - in the family, among friends, on TV, on the street. The author is famous for his apt and ironic statements about children. Quotes from his interviews are rapidly spreading across the web.
fact
Personal life
The famous writer was married four times, his current wife's name is Maya Georgievna. He claims that he has kept warm friendly relations with all his ex-wives, since he is a peace-loving person in himself and does not like conflicts.
Auster has five children. The first child - daughter Catherine, was born in the third marriage and after the divorce remained to live in the new family of her father. Four more - Leah, Alexandra, Maria and Nikita - were given birth to by his next wife.
The writer's three children are already adults: the eldest daughter is an interior designer, Leah is an artist, a graduate of the Surikov School, Alexander works in the advertising field. They are non-public people, and their photos rarely appear in the media. The youngest are still adolescents, they study at an external school. Oster also has two granddaughters.
Favorite writers of Grigory Bentsionovich are Dostoevsky and Dumas. He admits that he rereads the novel about the Musketeers every 5-7 years and always finds something new in it. Oster prefers to rest at his homeland in Crimea - according to him, this is much better for him than foreign trips.

Interesting Facts
Oster is the only children's writer on the Who's Who in Russian Postmodernism list, although he himself never considered himself either a postmodernist or a literary dissident. In the original version of Auster's tale, the kitten named Woof is red and mongrel. The colorful features of the then fashionable Siamese breed were given to him by the director of the cartoon Leonid Shvartsman.
In the anthology of children's literature published in Canada, Grigory Bentsionovich turned out to be the most large-circulation writer: his works were published in the amount of 12 million copies, while other authors were given no more than 300-400 thousand. The network mentions that at one time the writer worked under the pseudonym Auster, but this is just a long-standing misunderstanding: at one time, the editor of Veselye Kartinki put two dots above the letter e in his surname by mistake.
