Gregg Araki

Coming from an American-Japanese family, Gregg Araki grew up in Santa Barbara. Very early on attracted by the visual arts (he was particularly interested in comics) but also passionate about pop music, he nevertheless thought for a time of becoming a veterinarian. It is the first part of his Teen Apocalypse Trilogy , which continues in 1995 with The Doom Generation, a trashy road movie with desperate humor, and ends with Nowhere (1997), described by the filmmaker as "an episode of Beverly Hills 90210 under acid " . On a lighter note, he then turns Splendor, a comedy that once again describes a threesome.

After signing for MTV the pilot of a series that will never see the light of day, he returned to the cinema with Mysterious Skin, presented in Venice in 2004 and acclaimed by critics. Far from fun movieswhich made his reputation, the filmmaker surprises with this serious work, adapted from a novel by Scott Heim, which plunges us into the traumas of two boys victims of a pedophile. Araki then gives himself a break by filming the delirious Smiley Face (presented at the Directors' Fortnight) in which he recounts the eventful day of an actress (Anna Faris) who devoured her roommate's cannabis cakes.

This "smoky" parenthesis closed, he returns to his first love with Kaboom and revives his favorite themes by describing the dark comedy of a student sinking into the meanders of his mysterious and nightmarish reveries. With this film, in which he once again holds the three key positions (director, screenwriter, producer), he obtains a nomination at the Venice Mostra 2010.

Four years later, he returns with White Bird in a blizzard (2014) , adapted from a novel by Laura Kasischke, and nominated at the Sundance Film Festival the same year. In this dramatic comedy, it stars the very fashionable Shailene Woodley, who plays Kat, a teenage girl disturbed by the sudden disappearance of her mother (Eva Green) and the discovery of her sexuality.
