Biography

The leader of the "Grazhdanskaya Oborona" group, which was considered the flagship of punk rock and psychedelicism in the Soviet and Russian musical space, Yegor Letov said that "any real creativity should be done by oneself." The musicians composed, worked in the studio, toured and demonstrated in every possible way that they did not recognize any authorities except themselves. Perhaps that is why the frontman stated that "GrOb Records" is the only independent formation in the country.

Composition

The biography of "Civil Defense", also referred to as "GO" or "Gr. Ob.", Began in November 1984. The backbone of the group was made up of friends - vocalist Igor (Yegor) Letov and bassist Konstantin "Kuzya" Ryabinov. The third member of the team, Andrei "Boss" Babenko, left after six months.

Later on, about three dozen musicians who were part of the main and concert ensembles passed through the "Civil Defense". These are brothers Oleg and Evgeny Lishchenko, Oleg "Manager" Sudakov, guitarist Dmitry Selivanov who committed suicide. Valery Rozhkov, Evgeny "Jackson" Kokorin and Igor Zhevtun did not refuse invitations to perform on the same stage.

In 2001, Alexander Chesnakov, an arranger and songwriter of the Omsk collective "Collection of Butterflies", joined the group. In 2005, "GO" left out of work Alexander Andryushkin, nicknamed "The Phantom of the Opera". According to the group's website, the drummer violated the established rule that none of the musicians had the right to communicate with television journalists.

Music

The group's debut album is considered "Filthy Youth". The compositions included in the playlist corresponded to the name - “I hate women”, “Mama b ***”, “Diarrhea-apotheosis”. Letov himself spoke of the songs as inhumane in relation to the audience. The recording reached the general public in 1988, was officially released only 8 years later, in 2005 it was reissued on the Mystery of Sound label.

In the comments to the reissued "Mousetrap" the frontman of "Civil Defense" noted that this is the first album that he recorded on his own. Egor performed the parts on musical instruments, then mixed them in his home studio using a homemade delay setup. The disc sounded "Deserter", "Mimicry", "Die young".

Likewise, by recording on tape and further overlaying individual parts, "Totalitarianism", "Necrophilia" and "Good!" Were recorded. The song "My sadness is light" from the second album was performed by rock singer Yanka Diaghileva.

Another fruit of Letov's own labor was the album "The Steel Was Tempered". In it, the musician reflected his attitude to the restriction of personal freedom, the names of the compositions speak for themselves: "New 37th", "Soldiers are not born", "KGB".

"Live" recording of "Songs of Joy and Happiness" was made in 1989 on a visit to the "AuktsYon" group, was finalized in Omsk, the Reproductor portal noted. The album “Healthy and Forever” opened the cycle under the code name “Russian Field of Experiments”, one of the most significant projects of Letov, which he himself called the peak of sound audacity, uncompromising and non-commercial.

It was the first time that the hit "My Defense" was sounded, which the listeners regularly asked to perform at concerts of "Civil Defense" and during Letov's solo recitals. The DVD edition included a video clip, which became the first documentary about the group.

The base material for the album "The Last Concert in Tallinn" was a recording of a performance at the Estonian festival "Rock for Democracy". During a concert with the participation of "Chaif", "Television" Letov announced the disbandment of the group due to the fact that he did not want to become a part of the pop scene, although the popularity among informals at "Civil Defense" was high.

After that, Yegor recorded the album Jump-Skok: Children's Songs, which became, in fact, his solo project. Among others, the album includes the composition "About the Fool", which was enthusiastically received by the fans and was present in all the concert albums of "Gr.Ob."

The recordings of "The Last Concert" were distributed illegally at first, then in 1997 an official videotape was released, two years later - a CD. In 2007, a DVD was released, but without the bonus track performed by Yanka Diaghileva, which is on the first albums. The plate "Instructions for survival" got its name from the group of the same name from Tyumen. The rights to the songs belonged to her soloist Roman Neumoev.

The group's performance at the Krylya Sovetov Sports Palace in the spring of 1994 attracted 5,000 spectators and became a high-profile event for Moscow. The concert brought together the composition of the "Civil Defense" considered to be gold - Igor Zhevtun, Konstantin Ryabinov and Yegor Letov. In the finale, the musicians performed the Soviet hit by Alexandra Pakhmutova and Nikolai Dobronravov "The battle continues again."

The album "Reanimation" is a dilogy with "Long Happy Life". The disc was recorded on modern digital equipment, in the title Yegor tried to put memories of the time he spent in a psychiatric clinic. To release the album, the author announced a label competition. The obligatory condition was the publication of the entire discography of "Gr.Ob." As a result, Ayrat Sharipov's “Mystery of Sound” began publishing the musical heritage.

The musicians delighted with the original presentation of the song "Lyubo" to a well-known tune and a perky "Bespontov pie". Regarding the latter, the author of the lyrics stated that there is no final version of the song in nature, and it could be endless. The phrase "Our people loves every g ***" was subsequently used by Sergei Shnurov, making fun of the habits of his compatriots in the song.

In 2002, Starfall was released. The album consisted of compositions by Soviet authors in an arrangement typical of Civil Defense. CDs and cassettes quickly became a rarity, in 2011 a vinyl record was released with the bonus "Caravel" performed by Natalia Chumakova.

Announcing "Long Happy Life", Letov said that the album managed to realize what had failed in the previous ones. The singer described the songs as "the dreams of a man in a state of war." The cover of Boris Grebenshchikov's composition "Electric Dog" was released as a separate single after Yegor's death.

The last studio album "Why do I have dreams?", In which drummer Pavel Peretolchin participated, was released by the group in 2007. Egor allotted no more than three hours to process each of the 19 tracks and as a result “was satisfied by 500%”.

"Civil Defense" now

In the fall of 2017, the Reproductor portal announced that the albums Filthy Youth and Optimism were reissued. The new edition came in the form of 6-page digipacks, which were accompanied by booklets. The playlist includes bonus tracks prepared by Yegor Letov back in 2005.

Not long before that, the Moscow label of Alexander Valedinsky "Vyrgorod" re-released the records of "Civil Defense" - "Russian Field of Experiments" and "Songs of Joy and Happiness". The company made digital recordings from original tapes, mastered and supplemented the albums with bonus tracks.

As "Novaya Gazeta" wrote, the work of "Gr.Ob." also in demand in Brooklyn. Letov's fan, black musician Chase Winters, says he understands the singer's lyrics on a sensual level.

Petersburg musician and founder of the Billy's Band Billy Novik, for whom Dostoevsky, Solzhenitsyn and Letov are the links of the same chain, gave the only club concert in April 2018. Within the walls of "16 tons" hits "Civil Defense" and from solo projects of Yegor sounded.

REN-TV dedicated a documentary to the memory of the “main person of Siberian punk”.
