Sting is a legendary British rock singer who gained worldwide fame through his solo career.

The boy was born on October 2, 1951, in the town of Wallsend in northern England. At birth, the firstborn of Ernest Matthew and Audrey Sumner was named Gordon Matthew Thomas Sumner. The family later had two more sisters and a brother. 

Gordon's father worked for a long time in the installation production, and his mother was engaged in medicine. The Sumners soon acquired a dairy shop, and Gordon was eager to help his parents in their business. 

Work did not interfere with the boy's ability to learn. Gordon mastered the skills of playing the piano, and at the age of 10 he received a guitar as a gift, which he never parted with.

Sumner Jr. sang at church services, went swimming and read a lot. In many ways, the development of the future musician was influenced by trips to the rock clubs of the town, which hosted concerts of famous rockers of that time. 

An indelible impression on the young man was made by the play of Jimi Hendrix, which inspired him to create his own compositions. A versatile young man of athletic build and tall stature (183 cm) managed to take part in the English Athletics Championship, where he took second place. After graduating from college, Gordon, unexpectedly for his family, went to study to be an English teacher.

After receiving a teacher's diploma, the young man got a job at a local school. During his teaching career, Gordon finally strengthened his desire to perform on stage with his own music. He got a job as a bass player in the Newcastle Big Band, and then moved to another jazz group, Phoenix Jazzmen, where he gained professional experience. 

With the light hand of his colleagues, Gordon gets a nickname - Sting, which becomes not only his creative pseudonym, but also his second name. Translated from English "sting" means "sting", "wasp". In the early 70s, the musician first created his own rock group called "Last Exit". The band became very popular in their hometown, and the song "I Burn for You" was recorded in the capital of Great Britain.

When Sting was 26 years old, he received an offer from eminent London musician Stuart Copeland and his partner Andy Summers to join The Police. The group was a trio, and the early versions of the tracks "Fall Out" and "Roxanne" were not popular with young people. But soon, after the signing of a contract with the label A&M, on the basis of which the disc "Outlandos d'Amour" was released, the ratings of the rock band increased.

Professional manager Miles Copeland competently approached the promotion of the album's singles, and at the end of 1979 "Roxanne" entered the top twenty of the British charts. Thanks to the release of the albums "Zenyattà Mondatta", "Reggatta de Blanc", the musicians' fame reached its peak. 

Already in 1980, the team went on their first world tour, and the songs of the new albums regularly hit the British charts and did not leave the rigid rotation of the UK radio stations.

After the tour, Sting writes music for independent projects, while remaining a member of The Police. But the organizer of the rock band Stuart Copeland was not happy with this state of affairs. Even though the fourth album "Ghost in the Machine" was named one of the greatest albums of the century according to the "Rolling Stone" edition, the breakup of the group was inevitable. The last album "Synchronicity" appeared in 1983, after which the musicians embarked on their final world tour, during which they announced the end of their joint activities.

Sting's solo career opened a new page in his creative biography and immediately began with great success - the disc "Dream of the Blue Turtles" sold millions of copies in Europe and overseas. The jazz style of performance, the use of musical motifs from Sergei Prokofiev's suite in the hit "Russians", distinguished Sting from other rock performers. In 1987, the musician went on an international tour, during which he created his second solo collection "Nothing Like The Sun". 

To record new hits, the singer attracts world stars: Eric Clapton, Mark Knopfler and Andy Summers. The early 90s albums Soul Cages and Ten Summoner's Tales, represented by the hits All This Time, If I Ever Lose My Faith In You and Fields Of Gold, placed Sting's name at the top of the world's music tabloids.

Music discs of the second half of the 90s "Mercury Falling" and "Brand New Day" once again became platinum in the singer's homeland and in the United States. The song from the second album "Desert Rose" was performed by Sting together with the musician from Algeria Sheba Mami, and the video created for this single became a kind of commercial for the Jaguar S-type jeep, in which the musicians were moving along the sand dunes of the desert. 

Sting's voice becomes recognizable all over the world, and in his homeland the musician is awarded the Order of the British Empire and the title of Sir. With his work, Sting always tries to express an active social position. After the high-profile terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, the singer released the collection “Sacred Love”, in which he expressed pain and empathy for the victims and their relatives.

During the 2000s, three more discs “Songs from the Labyrinth”, “If On a Winter's Night…”, “Symphonicities” were released. The popularity of the albums is declining in comparison with the first solo projects of the artist. In the second half of the 2000s, the group "The Police" unites to hold commemorative concerts. 

In 2007-2008, there are 150 performances, the most popular of which at the rock festival "Isle of Wight" gathers 70 thousand fans. In 2013, the musician's studio album "The Last Ship" appears. Two years later, together with French pop star Mylene Farmer, Sting released the hit "Stolen Car", a cover version of the song from the 2003 compilation "Sacred Love".

Sting's songs were often used in cinematography. 1993 was marked by the creation of the hit "All For Love", which was performed in collaboration with Brian Adams and Rod Stewart. The legendary trio hits the first line of the American charts, and also becomes the soundtrack for the movie The Three Musketeers. Another single, "Shape", written by Sting in collaboration with guitarist Dominic Miller and jazz musician Larry Adler, was used by Luc Besson in the drama "Leon". 

The song "Dessert", also known as "Desert Rose" from 1999, became the main track of the Brazilian TV series "Clone". She has also appeared in Japanese and Indian feature films. Now Sting lives in New York with his loving wife and children from his second marriage. In addition, the musician's family owns two estates, one of which is located near Stonehenge, and the other in Tuscany. The singer is happy with Trudy and cannot imagine life without her. The couple created the Foundation, which is dedicated to the protection of tropical forests.

Having celebrated its 65th anniversary in the fall of 2016, the legend of rock music delighted fans with a new studio project "57th and 9th". For his age, Sting looks fit and energetic. Sting explained his departure from The Police with a dream about how a beautiful garden was destroyed by blue turtles. In this dream, the singer saw a symbolic message urging him to start a solo career. Sting is a supporter of the legalization of natural drugs and calls for an end to the persecution of people for using marijuana. The musician recommends the fight against drug addiction not by forceful methods, but by explaining to people the dangers of using potent drugs.
