American writer Glen Cook specializes in creating fantastic stories. This genre attracted him already in his youth, and the author began to write from the 7th grade, however, then these were only amateur works. Today his name is known to fans of fantasy stories in America, Russia and other countries around the world.

Cook's biography began in the summer of 1944. The boy was born in New York, USA, however, almost immediately moved with his parents to California, where he spent his childhood. From a young age he loved to read, once he took a selection of books about Tarzan from a neighbor and from that time did not let go of his stories. These were westerns and historical novels, and then science fiction. And when everything was already read in the local library, the young man decided to try to compose something of his own.

So in the 7th grade, Cook first writes about Adam and Eve, then comes up with a story about aliens who participate in the battle on the plain of Armageddon with the Egyptians and Hittites. In high school, the young man received rave reviews from teachers when it came to writing stories on any topic, but to this day, "rare" examples of Cook's writing skills have not survived. Then the boy was allowed to come up with individual articles for the school newspaper.

Having received a certificate of maturity, Glen goes to college, but the guy never gets to study there. Cook takes a sabbatical and is sent to serve in the US Navy, where he is enlisted in the strike unit of the Third Marine Battalion. After leaving the service a few years later, the future writer moved to St. Louis and got a job at General Motors. It was a factory for the production of ammunition for the American army, where it was located at the assembly line, which created the shells for the howitzer.

Beginning as an amateur, in late 1967 and early 1968, Glen became a commercial author, a young man, and then worked in a factory. 1968, which began with the Tet Offensive, was the hottest of all during the Vietnam War. Cook had to work 12 hours a day, 7 days a week.

In the first six months, he only got 2 days off, although then the young man only answered phone calls. He was not allowed to leave for a long time, since an emergency call could sound at any moment. And if this happened, it was often possible to solve the problem quickly, which gave the author a lot of time to read.

Studying the books, Cook accumulated material in his head. At that time, there were only a couple of publications a month, many of them were reprints already read by Glen. And one day a young man realizes that he can write better. Taking a pencil and paper, the writer composes the first stories. But, by his own admission, it turned out to be more difficult than he thought. Before the books hit store shelves, he filled up more than one notebook. Some of the manuscripts ended up in the trash bin, and then they were finished again.

Work at the factory did not prevent the man from engaging in creativity, and therefore he worked there for another 30 years, regularly publishing his own books. Cook's first edition appeared in the bookstore in 1970. This happened after listening to the course of the Clarionov seminar. Glen published his debut work "Swamp Academy" under the pseudonym Greg Stevens.

Then the man begins to write a novel from the series "Chronicles of the Black Squad", the first book of which was published only in 1984. Although now there are already 10 editions, including Black Detachment, Shadows Concentrate, Play of Shadows, White Rose and others, the author did not close this series. In the future, he plans to release 2 more books. Each of the presented works was read to the core by fans of science fiction and analyzed into quotations, which are often published today in various contexts.

The plot described covers the history of a detachment of mercenaries for a couple of decades. This cycle, which has already become a classic of the genre, is in great demand among the former and active military. The man himself, talking about the reasons for the popularity of the series, notes that the main characters there act in the same way as real guys would behave in their place.

The author's series "The Adventures of Garrett" has become no less popular. It includes 14 editions, the first of which was written in 1987, and the last in 2013. Each novel meets the requirements of the noir style, contains elements of adventure and detective story, as well as a lot of humor based on the dialogue of the characters.

The described adventures take place in the fantasy world, or rather, in the kingdoms inhabited by elves, centaurs and vampires. At the same time, the fantastic and magical aspects in the books are given much less space than detective investigations. The series "Empire of Horror" impressed the audience no less. The first volume "The Darkness of All Nights" was published in 1979, then Glen released 8 more books, and in 2018 he completed the cycle with the novel "Wrath of Kings". Such a large gap between the beginning and the end of writing occurred for the reason that Cook at that time was working on other cycles that were in great demand among readers.

There was a time when Glen also wrote individual novels, novels and short stories. After the "Swamp Academy" he wrote the stories "Night of Deadly Silence" and "Chasing the Ghost." In 1972 he wrote "The Heirs of Babylon", and 10 years later - the work "The Sword Bearer". The last separate edition, not related to any of the cycles, was the novel Singing in Blood.

Cook has been called one of those rare writers whose talent is equally subject to science fiction and fantasy. He has an extraordinary ability to switch between writing his own series, while maintaining the correct tone and intonation characteristic of such different books.

It is not surprising that in 2017 the IM Global Television studio started talking about the adaptation of the author's stories. The company plans to translate the series "Chronicles of the Black Squad" into the film, including the book "Port of Shadows", which has not yet been published. A lot of time has passed since the announcement of this news, but other information about the filming was not reported to the press. Perhaps they decided to postpone them or completely changed their minds to implement the project.

Glen met his future wife during his student years, when he was in college. She became his first and last woman in fate, and therefore we can say with confidence that the writer's personal life has developed successfully. In this marriage, the couple had three children.

Despite universal recognition, even having received fame, Glen remains a non-public person and prefers not to advertise the details of his private life. He is not registered on social networks and does not even publish his photos on the covers of books, preferring to decorate the editions with pictures in the fantasy style.

Now Cook no longer works at the factory, and therefore he had more time to write books. But, as Glen assures, he used to sit down at the pen much more often, and now he does it according to his mood. Fans of his work are eagerly awaiting new exciting novels.
