Young Russian figure skater Gleb Smolkin, a former singles junior from St. Petersburg, became an ice dancer in 2015 and moved to Moscow. Unable to rehearse, the husband began looking for an apartment. And soon the couple acquired a communal apartment beaten by life in the center of St. Petersburg. While the resettlement and repairs were underway, the child grew up, began to go to kindergarten.

Later, the parents sent the boy to a music school. I wanted my son to learn to play the piano, because both father and mother play music very well. And when the conversation turned to the sports section, I had to reflect. At first, the child wanted to become a fencer, but then, by a joint family decision, the choice stopped at figure skating. From the age of 6, the boy began to study in the section. This became the starting point of his sports biography.

Father Boris Smolkin told about the personal life of the young champion in an interview with one of the publications:

At one time, fans of the athlete attributed to him a relationship with his ice partner Diana Davis, but this information was not confirmed. She was born as an ordinary child, but due to an error of doctors, she partially lost her hearing. The girl could hardly distinguish between the sounds of music and the conversations of people, because of this she grew up constrained and shy. Public speaking helped the girl get rid of the complex.

The skater is not very active on social networks: sometimes he uploads a photo on Instagram.

Gleb's mother took him to classes, watched the trainings and listened to the first praise from the mentors who recognized the boy's talent. However, giftedness in this matter is not a decisive factor. The main thing here is character, perseverance and willpower. And the fact that his son grew into a promising athlete, Boris Grigorievich considers the merit of his wife, who was involved in his upbringing and formation.

At the age of 9, Gleb makes his debut at the Russian Championship of the 2008/2009 season in the "junior age" category. And at 12 he became a candidate for master of sports. The boy seriously studied at the Figure Skating Academy with coaches Evgeny Rukavitsyn and Kirill Davidenko. The rigid training schedule required daily activities, sometimes several times a day. The results of dedication were reflected in the number of victories.

The young man has repeatedly become a prize-winner of the Russian and St. Petersburg figure skating cups and championships, won the 3rd stage of the St. Petersburg Cup in 2012 in his age category.

At the age of 15, a teenager suddenly makes an unexpected decision: to hang skates on a nail and go to football. Having become a player of the St. Petersburg Lokomotiv, Smolkin Jr. devoted 2 years to a new sport, played at the St. Petersburg beach soccer championship. However, he later realized that he had made a hasty decision and returned to the ice in 2015.

True, now the guy decided to leave his singles career and switched to the dance discipline with a good height for this area - 182 cm.

Soon the young Smolkin moved to the capital. Ekaterina Mironova became Gleb's first partner. But already in the next season 2016/2017 he skates with Svetlana Lizunova. Smolkin and Davis successfully debuted at home at the Moscow Open Championship among juniors - 2018, taking 3rd place. Then the couple was expected to skate at the Russian-Chinese youth games and at the international Tallinn Trophy tournament in Estonia, where the participants were awarded 2nd place.

Also in the 2018/2019 season, they were awaited by an event in the form of competitions of junior pairs at the final of the Russian Cup - 2019. They were in the lead after rhythm dance, but lost in the free program to Irina Khavronina and Dario Chirizano, who became the winners of the tournament.

The couple's second place caused a considerable resonance among the fans of this sport, 0.18 points were separated from the winners. Diana's mother even called the judge's verdict unfair, calling the participants leaders, and their skating impeccable. The woman explained that she considered a 2-point decrease in the technique marks in the free skate unjustified.

In the summer of 2019, another important competition awaited the couple: they became participants in the junior Grand Prix series of figure skating season 2019/2020 in Lake Placid. At the second stage, they started with a rhythm dance. As a result of the program, Avonli Nguyen and Vadim Kolesnik, representing the United States, became the best. The Russians Davis and Smolkina lost only 4 points, the couple won 2nd place.

Immediately after that, the guys were expected to perform at the Grand Prix in Chelyabinsk, where they again got the 2nd place. The couple were bypassed by Yelezaveta Shanaeva and David Narizhny, the gap was more than 12 points. During 2 performances, the participants demonstrated complex supports and twizzles.

After that, the athletes warmly said goodbye to their former mentor and joined the team of Igor Shpilband. They decided to change not only the coach, but also the host country, having moved to the USA. As the skaters said, there were not very many options: Diana thought about Shpilband, and Gleb gladly supported her idea, considering Igor the best specialist in the history of ice dancing. So they decided to go overseas and trust their mentor, and soon realized that it was not in vain. According to the guys, the coach knows how to work for them and what sides need to be developed.

The move was given to the performers easily, with this helped by the mother of Diana Eteri Georgievna, who flew with them and helped settle in a new country, so from the 2nd day they felt comfortable.

Talking about the difference in the training process, Smolkin notes that in America everything is different. But not better or worse, but simply differently: the system works differently, a different approach to the process. Gleb continues to train under the guidance of Igor Shpilband. In February 2020, together with his partner Diana Davis, he performed a free dance at the Russian Figure Skating Championship, which was held in Saransk.
