Mikhail Tolstykh is one of the key figures in the conflict in eastern Ukraine. But the media of the warring parties position him differently: a brutal killer and, in contrast, a militia and a defender. The name of the battalion commander often appeared in the news: as a hero who performs feats for his people and deserves a monument, and as an executioner who blindly followed the propaganda.

Little is known about the childhood of Mikhail Sergeevich Tolstykh. He was born on July 19, 1980 in the city of Ilovaisk, located in the Donetsk region. In the face of Givi, they recognized him for his harshness towards the captured soldiers of the Ukrainian army. The video from the airport shows that the battalion commander tore off the chevrons of the "cyborgs" (as the Ukrainian security officials were called) and forced them to eat. In other shots, he revealingly kills a soldier. In the fall of the same year, he was appointed commander of the Somalia volunteer battalion, and then colonel of the DPR Armed Forces. In February 2015, the European Union adds the name of the battalion commander to the sanctions list.

In 2016, the Military Prosecutor's Office of Ukraine accused Mikhail Tolstykh of bullying prisoners of war and murders. For this he was threatened with a long prison term.

Mikhail Tolstykh was very fond of sports and closely followed the events in football and boxing. He rooted for the Ukrainian club Shakhtar and the Spanish Real Madrid.

He supported Russian politics, in particular the Liberal Democratic Party, headed by Vladimir Zhirinovsky. He did not recognize the new government in Ukraine, because instability and devastation came with it. And the Maidan, according to him, was organized by high-ranking people from America, and not by Ukrainians who were striving to develop their state further.

Mikhail Sergeevich Tolstykh was killed on February 8, 2015 at his workplace. He was at the military base in Makeyevka when the office began to fire shells from the Bumblebee flamethrower. Other sources claim a bomb was pre-planted inside. The cause of death is injuries incompatible with life.

In Donetsk and Luhansk regions, they declared mourning for three days. Farewell to the battalion commander Givi took place at the Opera and Ballet Theater in Donetsk.
