Biography

Gérard Blain, a journeyman on the road to the New Wave, nevertheless begins with figuration in what the Cahiers du cinema will call "papa's cinema". In addition to his first role in Le Carrefour des enfants perdus by Leo Joannon (1943) at the age of thirteen, we can see him in Les Enfants du paradis by Marcel Carné, Avant le deluge by André Cayatte, or Here is the weather. des assassins (1956) by Julien Duvivier, in which he plays his first important role.

It is moreover this performance that François Truffaut salutes in Artsand which made him engage Blain in his second short film Les Mistons, shot in 1957, in which the actor was partnered by his wife at the time, Bernadette Lafont. Quickly, he became a figure of the French New Wave movement by playing for Claude Chabrol, which allowed him to hit the screen successively in Le Beau Serge, then Les Cousins, both produced in 1958. In the first, he embodies a character of a pathetic jaded alcoholic, whom Jean-Claude Brialy tries to save in spite of himself. In the second, Blain plays a law student going to the capital to finish his studies, and who discovers the patachon life of his cynical cousin (still played by Brialy, another figure of the New Wave).

After having filmed in Italy, Gérard Blain attracts the favors of Hollywood. Howard Hawks debauchery to play a young rebel against John Wayne in Hatari (1962). Tired of a director who does not communicate with his actors, and of a star system that he sums up to "a stupid life in a city of cars, to observe the meanness between actors" , he refuses to sign a contract in the United States and returned to France. The roles follow one another for Costa-Gavras (Un homme de trop) or Mocky (Les Vierges), and Blain becomes loyal to Italian director Gianni Vernuccio. The two men will shoot An unconscious bitch (1966) then Paolo and Francesca, the director's last film.

Realization is now in question for Gérard Blain. In 1971, he made his first film under the claimed influence of Robert Bresson. Also for the occasion, screenwriter and dialogue writer, Les Amis is a partly autobiographical film. The street life of this young boy without a father is reminiscent of the director's personal journey. The film was rather well received by critics, selected at Cannes, and won the Golden Leopard at the 1971 Locarno Film Festival in the “Best First Work” category. Building on his momentum, Blain directed Le Pélican, a film about fatherly love, which he performed alongside the young César Chauveau. His story of a father ready to do anything to see his son for the last time earned him a nomination for the Golden Bear for best film at the 1974 Berlin Film Festival.

Blain's cinema has its own characteristics: amateur actors, a soundtrack worked on in the studio, and a clean staging. This is also the case with A Child in the Crowd (1976), nominated for the Palme d'Or at Cannes, the story of a young boy under the Occupation, without landmarks and without family, who will seek the affection with some men. The subject is tough, and Blain treats him modestly. Touching is the fiftieth birthday he presents in his next film Un Second souffle (1978). Desiring above all to stay young, François leaves wife and children for Catherine, thirty years his junior. After an accident, François will feel old, and will try to win back his wife. The film is pessimistic, as is Le Rebelle (1980), a film rooted in its time: the story of a young commuter who has to provide for his mother's needs in the hospital, and his sister, threatened by the foster home. He is unemployed and will become a murderer, to counter the sexual advances of one of his contacts and to steal his money. The tragic fates of Blain's heroes are developed in his disillusioned view of the world and of society.

If Gérard Blain portrays a love story, it is not a peaceful idyll. Thus, he transposes Romeo and Julietin an HLM suburb of Roubaix with Pierre and Djemila (1987). Torn between religious and racial prejudices, the two heroes will see their love broken. The controversial film obtained a nomination for the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival, but left empty-handed. Be that as it may, the reviews are rave and salute in the director the art of not having fallen into the political film. At the same time, Blain is filming food roles, and is slow to return to management. In 1995, he co-wrote with Marie-Hélène Bauret the story of Until the end of the night, that of a rebellious sixty-year-old who, for love and need of money, commits various offenses that will cost him the maximum. Gérard Blain takes the stage, as does his son Paul Blain in a very refined setting.

Always protesting, critical of his work as of those of his fellow filmmakers and not having the language in his pocket, Blain has not made only friends in the cinema world. He writes with his son among other things the story of a son deprived of his father by an assassination sponsored in the name of profit, and who will do everything to avenge him. This slice of life, titled So be it (1999), is the last presented by Gérard Blain, who wrote it when he himself was close to death. The film was generally well received, and even a Golden Leopard at the Locarno Festival, like his first film Les Amis, in 1970. So be it, his tenth feature film, will be an esteemed success for this actor. - tormented author, who leaves in the cinema an unclassifiable and still topical work.
