He decides to leave the sport and gets a job as a road worker, and later in the local prison moonlighted as an assistant warden. Meanwhile, his brother was under investigation for selling drugs. However, this did not prevent the fighter to save money and make a long-awaited operation, however, further rehabilitation took a year. Friend Mickey persuades him to resume training, so he returns to the sport and after a year again enters the ring.

Nine wins in a row made the comeback memorable, with boxers such as Alfonso Sanchez and Louis Vedera among the opponents. And then he was waiting for the title fight with Vince Phillips, which he lost because of a strong dissection.

Then there were the victories over Emanuel Augustus, Reggie Green and Shi Neary. With the latter fought for the title of champion, which still took possession. He was constantly playing at welterweight (up to 66 kg), and the average height of 173 cm allowed the athlete to move deftly around the ring.

The famous fight, or rather, the first fight of the "trilogy" with Arturo Gatti took place in 2002. Mickey defeated the enemy, the victory he was awarded by adding up the majority of the judges' votes. Six months later, they were waiting for the second meeting, Ward lost, as in the third fight, held in 2003.

Their every entry into the ring poured into a furious fight from the first to the last second and was recognized as the meeting of the year and the greatest "trilogy" in the history of boxing, in honor of which in 2010 even released a feature film "Fighter" based on the career of Mickey. The fight with Gatti was the last in Ward's career, in this fight he earned about $3 million, which allowed the man to leave the sport and go into business.

In 2005, the lovers formalized the relationship. They raised together a daughter Mickey from his first marriage Casey, who after the divorce of his parents stayed to live with his father. There is no other information about the children in Ward's family in the press.
