Biography
Iris Murdoch has been hailed as one of the greatest British writers of the 20th century. Her legacy includes 26 fascinating books that will be read by generations of book lovers. A talented woman devoted her whole life to literature, despite the fact that there were many difficulties in her life.
fact
Childhood and youth
Jean Iris Murdoch's biography began on July 15, 1919 in the capital of Ireland - Dublin. Her father was a cavalryman in the First World War, and later entered the civil service. The girl's mother was an opera singer. Young people first met in Dublin, and in 1918 tied the knot. A year later, a daughter appeared in the family.
In 1920, Iris moved to London with her parents. It was in the capital of England that the writer's childhood passed. Despite this, the problems of her native Ireland always hurt a woman for a living, she did not deny her origin. In an interview, the author mentioned that her childhood was happy, and she called her union with her parents "the perfect trinity of love."
Murdoch graduated from an independent school in Rohampton and then entered a girls' school in Bristol. In 1938, she became a student at Somerville College, Oxford University. At first, the girl studied in the English course, and later began to study ancient and British literature. In 1942, she received her 1st degree diploma, graduating from college with excellent marks.
Iris could not continue her education due to the outbreak of the war. After her studies, she went to work at the Ministry of Finance, and in 1944 she moved to the UN as a clerk, where she stayed for 2 years. In 1947, the girl entered graduate school at Newnham College at the University of Cambridge, starting to study philosophy.
In her youth, Murdoch began her teaching career, receiving a position as teacher of philosophy at St Anne's College, Oxford University. The woman devoted 15 years of her life to this work. Oxford became a fateful place for her: it was here that the most important events in her biography happened.

Books
Murdoch's writing career began quite late. Her debut novel, Under the Net, was published in 1954. For a woman, writing stories was at first an amateur activity. She also composed before the official publication of her book, but her initial literary attempts had not been shown to the general public before.
Critics took Under the Net in completely different ways: some admired, while others categorically denied the complex combination of the traditions of the rogue novel and philosophy. In the future, the book was included in the list of "100 unsurpassed English-language novels of all time" by Time magazine. Iris's debut work was the only one of her entire bibliography with the dominance of the humorous genre.
Deciding to pursue literary work professionally, Murdoch began to act productively and confidently. Just 2 years after the first success, her second book, Escape from the Wizard, appeared on the shelves of bookstores, which was largely influenced by the then popular philosophy of existentialism.

In 1953, a woman wrote a book about Jean-Paul Sartre. At the very beginning of her career, fascinated by the philosophy of existentialism, the girl was influenced by such novels of this author as "The Wall" and "Nausea".
The end of the 60s was marked by the publication of a series of books called "novels of horror and mystery" by the researchers of Iris: "Unicorn", "Time of Angels", "The Severed Head", "Italian Woman". In them, Murdoch explores the influence of destructive passions on humans.
The comic overtones are continued in Murdoch's Wild Rose. In it, the woman managed to prove herself as a talented realist writer, as well as a continuer of the traditions laid down by the classics of British literature. The novel talks about freedom, love and marriage, and the author examines the relationship between these phenomena. In 1974, a 4-episode film was released on American television, which is the adaptation of this book.

The 1970s were characterized by Iris's maturity as a writer. She strove to continue the traditions established by Shakespeare, which is the exemplary embodiment of good. The author immersed her readers in theatrical poetics and created her own versions of classic literary plots. The "Shakespearean" cycle includes such works as "Jackson's Dilemma", "Black Prince", "Sea, Sea". The classic heroes received a new interpretation from Murdoch and turned their attention to the search for the meaning of life and goodness.
Iris drew inspiration from Plato for a significant period of her creative life. She began to reflect in her books about the search for a moral life, the relationship between illusion and reality. In The Man of Accidents, the woman talked abundantly about moral pursuits, and also explored the moral problem of the individual's responsibility to other people, using a comic form of presentation.

Iris's novel "The Black Prince", which is traditionally considered the best, was released in 1973. This work represents the author's interpretation of the story of Hamlet. Also, literary critics rank him as a "Platonic" series.
The "Black Prince" is characterized by a symbolic and intricate structure, as well as saturation with philosophical views. The complex plot structure gives way to frequent reflections of the protagonist. Thus, the book turned out to be difficult, but very exciting. In addition, the author does not fully interpret the novel, offering readers several options for its interpretation. The novel, a James Tate Prize-winning novel nominated for the Booker Prize, was met with rave reviews.
The work of the writer of the 1980s was marked by an increase in the game component, she began to create novels as rebuses - with encrypted meanings, various plot collisions and twists hidden in complex quotes, allusions, and references. The novel School of Virtue, published in 1985, tells the story of a psychoanalyst who is both a man and a demon and a wizard who is overwhelmed by passion.
Murdoch's recent writings have lost the unending prose charm that was inherent in her early work. Moralism has grown in them. The last novel of the writer, published in 1992, was called "Jackson's Dilemma".
In 1987, Iris was awarded the title of "Professor Emeritus of Oxford". The next year she won the prestigious Shakespeare Prize. In addition, in 1989 the woman was awarded the highest title of "Dame Commander of the British Empire", and in 1997 - the honorary Golden Pen Award for services to British literature.
fact
Personal life
In her personal life, Iris experienced 2 serious dramas: during the war, her beloved men, Franz Steiner and Frank Thompson, died. For this reason, the woman was unable to establish a serious relationship for a long time.
In the early 1950s, Murdoch met a colleague named John Bailey at Oxford. He worked as a teacher, writer and literary critic, so that the man and the woman had many interests in common. In 1956, they tied the knot and subsequently did not part until the very death of the great writer. The couple never had children.
An interesting fact is that after the death of Iris, her husband wrote a biography book with archive photos, which later served as the basis for the popular film, which received several Oscar statuettes. Despite this, those close to Murdoch reacted negatively to the book, claiming that the events from her biography were distorted and exaggerated in it.
fact
Death
Iris Murdoch, whose work is recognized by the entire literary community, suffered from Alzheimer's disease in the last years of her life. This was the cause of her death.
She suffered from memory loss, the inability to continue her intellectual activity, and was also unable to serve herself. All the worries about her were taken over by her husband, who did everything to prevent the woman from being sent to a nursing home.
Iris Murdoch passed away on February 8, 1999. The writer left behind a great legacy.
