In 1940, as soon as Galina finished the first grade, the city was occupied by German troops. Galina Shcherbakova recalled that the school, despite the occupation, remained open. But the parents did not let their daughter go to the second grade, fearing for her life.

However, a year later, the situation did not change, and Galina Shcherbakova (then still Rudenko) went to study. The girl was offended to deal with second graders, while her peers had already moved into the third. Therefore, Galina worked hard to make up for the missed year. After a while, the teacher agreed to transfer the girl to the third grade.

After graduating from school, Galina Shcherbakova entered the university in Rostov, and then, having already moved with her husband to Chelyabinsk, entered the Chelyabinsk pedagogical university, choosing the specialty of a teacher of Russian language and literature. After university, Galina Shcherbakova worked for some time by profession, and then got a job as a journalist in a local newspaper. However, she soon left journalism, which, according to the writer, distracted her from working on her own works.

The literary biography of Galina Shcherbakova began, according to the writer, with deep philosophical novels that no one wanted to publish. But one day it occurred to her to try her hand at creating a love novel. This is how the work "You Never Dreamed" was born - a talented variation on the eternal Shakespearean theme of Romeo and Juliet. Even the main characters are named Roman and Yulka.

The novel initially met with backlash from editors and censors. At that time, writing about love was considered bad manners: the thoughts of a Soviet person were to be directed only towards the early completion of the new five-year plan and the development of a new virgin land. The woman received special criticism for describing the main character's panties, but what is there, and the very word "panties" seemed too defiant and immoral.

In later interviews, Galina Shcherbakova told reporters that she reacted with indignation to the situation that developed at that moment. According to the writer, the reader should independently choose the story to read. The bookshelves should contain works by Vladimir Vysotsky, Alexander Solzhenitsyn, Viktor Pelevin.

Nevertheless, the novel was published in 1979 in the magazine "Youth". But the writer had to change the ending of the story. Boris Polevoy, the editor of the publication, insisted that the main character, who fell from a height, still remain alive.

The publication of the novel caused a double reaction. Moskovsky Komsomolets even wrote an indignant letter from readers who insisted on the removal of Boris Polevoy from work. But later the people who signed this letter confessed to Galina that in fact they really liked the story “You never dreamed of”. In addition, other letters poured into the editorial office - enthusiastic, with gratitude from readers.

A year later, in 1980, the novel was even filmed. The director was Ilya Fraz. However, here the Soviet reality also affected: many scenes had to be removed from the film, the heroine received a new name, and the ending became less tragic.

In addition to this story, the pen of Galina Shcherbakova belongs to no less talented works "Desperate Autumn", "The Door to Another's Life", "You Can't Forget to Remember", "At the Feet of Lying Women" and others. There were also new films based on the novels of the writer: "Boy and Girl" directed by Leonid Bochkov, "May I Die, Lord" by Boris Grigoriev, "Judge Ivanova's Personal File" directed by Ilya Fraz, and even the series "Women in a Game without Rules" directed by Yuri Moroz.
